Brisbane's Planisphere up the intensity on the epic synth-tinged heavy alt single, 'Blackout'
Brisbane’s Planisphere are back with a heavy synth-toned heavy alt track in ‘Blackout’. The new single breaks new ground thematically and sonically for Planisphere, and is the first taste of the band’s ‘Liminal Pt II’ EP.
Starting with a big hype production beat, the track then launches straight into some huge riffs, before making way for softer verses and a driving chorus. Lyrically, the track was inspired by a popular episode of TV show ‘The Last of Us’ and explores a heavy topic through a mix of emotions – resignation, reflection and a poignant sense of finality.
‘Blackout’ sees Planisphere dial up the intensity with their heavy alt/edm blending with a touch of synth-pop, bringing it all together into a tightened slab of prog-tinged riffery. ‘Blackout’ is grandiose in the most fun of ways, while equally delivering a sense of finality, lyrically. An epic track, and one to check out for fans of Voyager, for sure.
“I remember watching the Bill and Frank strawberry episode when it came out, and being really, really moved by how they portrayed Frank’s last days when he knew he was going to die. It got me thinking how I would feel if I knew I only had days left, or alternatively, that the whole world was about to end. How I might become hyper-aware of all the little things around me and savour everything with that heightened sense of finality that can only come after the acceptance. I already had the main riffs written, so after I came up with the verses, chorus & breakdown it all came together super quick!” - Lorcan Coates, Planisphere
Accompanying the release of the single, Planisphere have also delivered official visuals for Blackout, working with Aaron Griffiths (Like That Creative), the band brought the energy of the song to life with a killer video.
“We initially went for something simple, just a classic metal band in a warehouse idea, but with the edit Aaron (director) and Ryan (DoP) really pulled all the stops and created some beautiful imagery that fits so well with the themes of the track” - Lorcan Coates, Planisphere
Planisphere continues to build on the foundations of the songs in prior release ‘Liminal I’, solidifying their ability to seamlessly blend elements of electronic, pop, and heavy music styles to create an exciting modern rock sound. This release also further displays the DIY ethos shown in prior releases with the track being written, produced, recorded & mixed in house by Lorcan Coates.
‘Blackout’ marks the start of an exciting next chapter for the band, as Planisphere continue to pave their way as ones to watch in the alternative music scene in Australia.
‘Blackout’ is streaming now on all streaming platforms.
