Be drawn in by PAXY's latest massive, haunting single, 'Magnetic Field'
Naarm/Melbourne’s singer/songwriter, PAXY returns with her second single in ‘Magnetic Field’.
The moniker of Bridget Leila, PAXY brings tense and brewing indie-pop in this new track, which also hints at her blues/soul and rock influences, accentuated by introspective lyricism and an inimitable timbre.
On ‘Magnetic Field’, PAXY’s vocals are hauntingly raw and restrained while reflecting on the relatable experience of balancing inner conflict in the face of intense magnetism and the pursuit of validation. Influenced by the blues-influenced rock she grew up listening to and the blue-eyed soul of her beloved ‘Stripped’-era Christina Aguilera, the single demonstrates PAXY’s willingness to lay herself bare, weaving threads of vulnerability into the fabric of her music.
An eerie piano intro and the strum of a single electric guitar beckons the candid first lines that divulge ‘there’s a magnet in you and me, drawing us together far too easily’. The subtle piano continues as the backbone of the song in which PAXY’s vocals are saturated in a dark reverb that intensifies into a chorus with thunderous drums, driving electric guitar and choir-like backing vocals - only to fade back out into another verse. “The drawn out tension escalates into a chorus that I wanted to sound like a sonic sandstorm” PAXY says. This guitar work is credited to long-time John Farnham collaborator, Brett Garsed who blew her away with his input on the track.
‘Magnetic Field’ draws you in with its heavy, smokey blues tones, weighed down by the spaces between haunting key chords, western guitar, and a chain gang rhythm, all allowing PAXY to go full siren-mode. It’s a massive sound, without any clutter, with PAXY hitting somewhere between the modern theatrical delivery of Sahara Beck, and the blues-y attitude of Dallas Frasca.
Working out of Bradshaw Music Productions studio in Melbourne's South-East with producers Lee Bradshaw, Michael Bradshaw and Jeremy Chua, the song is a result of many years of back and forth adding and experimenting with different layers and sounds. Of this journey, PAXY shares, “This was the first song I brought in to my dear collaborator, Lee. I distinctly recall us both agreeing it was the weakest of the bunch...I thought I hated it but it eventually became our favourite...this one was meant to be played loud.”
‘Magnetic Field’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
