Adelaide/Kaurna Yerta ’s My Chérie returns with her latest single, ‘5 Years’ - a deeply personal and emotionally immersive track written in the aftermath of the breakdown of a long-term queer relationship. 

Grounded in intimate, everyday imagery, the song reflects on the quiet details of shared life while exploring grief, change, and the disorientation of rebuilding a future after love. 

At the heart of the song are lines that blur domestic life with emotional collapse, including “I say goodbye to our daughter, oh how badly I wanted to want that for our lives,” capturing not only the loss of the relationship, but the complexity of questioning the future you thought you were supposed to want. The lyric reflects the tension of navigating adulthood, commitment, and identity in your twenties — grieving both what was lost and what may never have truly fit. 

“I wrote this song crying in the backyard with a nylon acoustic,” says My Chérie. “I didn’t expect it to feel so alive when I recorded it. But once I got into the studio, it all opened up in a way I didn’t see coming.” 

Stepping away from the cinematic soundscapes of My Chérie's 2025 releases, '5 Years' embraces a more folk-tinged alternative palette. A warm, organic shuffle underpins the track, with a gently plodding bass line and guitars that flirt with blues and country textures, creating an intimate backdrop for My Chérie's captivating performance. Her vocals are equal parts heartbreaking and cathartic, carrying every ounce of vulnerability before soaring into an unexpectedly progressive-rock finale. '5 Years' is one of those rare songs that that grips from the opening moments, patiently building towards a stunning final release – one last emotional exhale that lingers long after the final note fades. 

Built from raw storytelling and warm, expansive indie folk-rock production, ‘5 Years’ moves between tenderness and emotional intensity. The track pairs reflective lyricism with an open, rhythmic soundscape, allowing space for the weight of the story to sit gently with the listener. It sits somewhere alongside artists like Big Thief, Soccer Mommy, and Samia. 

Written, performed, recorded, and produced by My Chérie, with additional production by Benny Tamblyn, the single continues her exploration of deeply human songwriting grounded in honesty, atmosphere, and emotional precision. 

Following the release of ‘5 Years’, My Chérie will support Montaigne at Adelaide's Lion Arts Factory on 15 August, alongside a run of South Australian performances including a free show at Cry Baby on 29 July and a headline appearance at the SALA Winter Festival in Port Pirie on 1 August.
