MOONWOOD make alt/indie hurt so good on third EP, ‘Kick In The Shins’
Sydney alternative rock outfit MOONWOOD return with their third EP, ‘Kick In The Shins’ — six tracks that capture a band continuing to sharpen its sound while embracing the tension between introspection and full-throttle release.
Five mates from Sydney’s Inner West, MOONWOOD have been merging indie romanticism with Australian alt-rock since 2020, building a reputation for music that balances widescreen ambition with an unmistakably human edge.
The EP brings together previously released tracks ‘Dreams’ and ‘Where Are The Kids?’ alongside four further cuts that expand on the band’s distinctive blend of alternative rock, melodic hooks and atmospheric textures. It’s music that hits like an exhale you didn’t know you were holding: loud, honest and cathartic, with the kind of emotional release that leaves you feeling a little lighter on the other side.
MOONWOOD hone in on their own take on Australian indie rock, embracing strong storytelling, chiming guitars and distinctive analogue synth textures across the six tracks of ‘Kick In The Shins’. The production is bold and unafraid to let its textures breathe, awash with beauty and, at times, sounding larger than life without ever tipping into pompous territory. Sometimes, we don’t need our indie rock to sound like it was thrown together carefree in the car park of some surfing beach. Sometimes, we want it shouted at us from the rooftops, compelling us to dance in the street.
Sonically, ‘Kick In The Shins’ occupies the space between the gut-punching intensity of Gang of Youths and the rhythmic strut of LCD Soundsystem, with the arena-sized ache of Kings of Leon and the heart-on-sleeve storytelling of Bruce Springsteen providing further touchstones. Dreamy guitar lines and synth-driven atmospheres meet driving rhythms and anthemic choruses, creating a sound equally at home in a moment of private reflection or a room full of people singing at the top of their lungs.
That balance between vulnerability and urgency has become a defining characteristic of MOONWOOD. Across releases including 2023’s ‘Curfew Hours’ and their more recent singles, the band have explored the messier corners of growing up, navigating relationships and confronting the distance between expectation and reality. Their songwriting finds emotional weight in the everyday, pairing introspective observations with arrangements that steadily build towards something bigger.
Two EPs deep before this latest release, MOONWOOD have also developed a formidable live presence on Sydney’s local circuit. Their performances move from slow-burning tension to full-room singalongs with an instinctive sense of momentum, bringing the same mix of intimacy and widescreen energy to the stage that runs through their recorded work.
‘Kick In The Shins’ finds MOONWOOD embracing both sides of that identity: confrontational where it needs to be, hopeful where it counts, and unafraid to make a little noise along the way.
MOONWOOD’s new EP, ‘Kick In The Shins’, is out now on all streaming platforms.
