Kevin Collett's 'Where Did We Go Wrong' commands your attention with heavily emotional, alt RnB take.

South-East QLD-based RnB/pop artist, Kevin Collett brings lustful melodies and RnB production flavours in an intensely-delivered new single, ‘Where Did We Go Wrong’, which is out now.

The first of a new body of work from the soulful artist, Kevin Collett caught the attention of audiences with his glossy single ‘I Hate That I Can’t Love Anyone But You’ (from his debut EP, ‘Beams’) which was placed on Spotify Editorial Playlists ‘NMF Philippines’ and ‘Chillax Ka Muna!’, and also represented the Philippines at the world’s largest Asian music festival, ‘Joy Ruckus Club’.

‘Where Did We Go Wrong’ presents a different bent on pop-based RnB, with Kevin harnessing warped acoustic guitar, garbled and glitched voices all under the main, intense vocal take. It’s all delicately pieced together, held only by Kevin’s voice, with the impression that it could all fall apart at any moment. The strength of the track comes from a complete turnaround at the halfway point; the four on the floor pound of the dance kick, the aggressiveness of the fuzz bass, and the overall build up - for the artist it is representing an outburst of panic, but to the listener it comes across as a moment of realisation, acceptance and determination. ‘Where Did We Go Wrong’ is much more than an RnB ballad - it’s bold, cerebral, emotionally-stirring, and commands your attention.

As Kevin Collett reveals below, ‘Where Did We Go Wrong’ is a tender release of emotion that was inspired by the downward trajectory of a loved ones life, and the feeling of guilt questioning whether or not more could have been done to help.

“In 2021 my life was brought to a halt when my mum had a stroke and was in hospital for over 12 months. I put on a brave face and devoted myself to helping her through her recovery. The day I went into the session with co writer and producer Tom Eggert, the thoughts and emotions I had suppressed poured out of me. I found myself reminiscing about her life and questioning if there was anything more I could have done in order for things to have been different.

When we first created this song, it was a delicate ballad start to finish. Very stripped back and raw. As we continued to work on the track, Tom suggested adding something different, and showed me the key change. The moment I heard it I was instantly drawn to the idea. It felt real. To me it represented the relatable outburst of panic and the feeling of losing emotional control. The idea that just when you think you know how something is going to end, it can catch you off guard and change in a moment. The idea that none of us really know what is going to happen next.” - Kevin Collett

It’s a creative, and alternative take on the RnB/Pop genres, with clever, innovative production making for a demanding listen.

‘Where Did We Go Wrong’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
