Brisbane's Square Tugs celebrate gender diversity in punk with new single, 'I Wanna Be The Minority'

Brisbane punk trio, Square Tugs have released their fifth single from their forthcoming debut album, ‘Monster Hits’, in the full-pelt track, ‘I Wanna Be The Minority’; a song that celebrates amazing female musicians and artists.

Spurred on by the experiences of playing in the Brisbane 80s punk scene, the band recall it being a very bloke-y affair, full of male privilege and female musicians were exceedingly rare.

‘I Wanna Be The Minority’ is a blistering punk rock epiphany; a self-realisation of gender inequality that has existed in the live scene for a very long time. Using three chords chock full of distortion, and channelling older NOFX, Pennywise, and the ilk, Square Tugs shout home the message they’re wanting spread, and in a sea of sweaty balls and inflated egos, it is something that must be said. Whether this is seen as White Knighting, or a fun, punk-fuelled delivery is up to the listener, we’re just glad that this scene does display more diversity of all sorts than it did even a decade ago.

Thankfully, it is a different story now compared to the 80s and 90s, living in a society in which anyone can be involved in music in a diverse and embracing community which ‘the Tugs love being a part of.

Musically, the song is influenced by 90’s American west-coast punk and it is an anthemic, up-beat song that kicks of their debut album “Monster Hits” which is released on the 4th of November.

Don’t miss the Square Tugs album launch at The Zoo on the 19th of November with The Glycereens, The Owen Guns (NSW) and Burnt Trash. This will be a show not to miss. Tickets via Oztix.

‘I Wanna Be The Minority’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
