Get immersed in JESA's latest single, 'Under-Deeper'

Northern Rivers’ artvist*, JESA returns with a daring new release in the psychedelic and gritty single, ‘Under-Deeper’, which is out now.

*artvist (n) - songs are written as a tool to comment on socio-political topics like climate change, mental health, feminism and sexuality.

The new single is hot off the back of previously praised single, ‘Black Swan’, and shows an edge, revealing an intriguing new layer to JESA’s poignant style.

Tied together with thought-provoking lyrics and swirling grunge textures, JESA draws creative inspiration from all corners including Radiohead and Phoebe Bridgers to local legends Eliza and The Delusionals.

Reminiscent of early 90s Australian alt/indie sounds, ‘Under-Deeper’ is a complex, layered beauty of alt-rock/roots, utilising a cascade of acoustic strumming on a bed of solid rhythms and well-positioned bass that provide plenty of swagger. The little touches, from the staccato synth strings, the tricky reversed lead guitar, and the obligatory tambourine for that extra boost towards the end; all of these just add some sweetener to JESA’s confident, svelte vocal delivery (that has just a hint of danger bubbling underneath). The darkness in the vocal harmonies in the bridge, which is the flip side to the big lifting choruses, makes for a tasty balance. This is a big festival-ready track that commands a crowd sing-along.

Echoing her struggles with mental health, “Under-Deeper” sonically mirrors her battles with panic attacks and staying strong in the face of anxiety.

Offering brooding chords and melancholy-infused soundscapes, JESA’s raw emotion is front and centre. JESA speaks on the themes of “Under-Deeper”, “I wanted to tackle my anxiety and speak to the wild youth with a high-energy, heart-racing track. The waves of instrumentation reflect the lyrics, that represent all the rage, fear and chaos of this particular time in my life”
