Victorian ratbags, Cheap-Skate return with a brand new slacker anthem packed full of fuzzy surf rock sounds in the latest single, ‘Puny Little Life Form’.

Honing in on sounds from WAVVES, FIDLAR, Dune Rats, Skeggs, and as far as the heavy nostalgia of Grand Theft Auto 5’s Vinewood Boulevard radio station, Cheap-Skate deliver a track that sums up the feeling of being insignificant and slowly detonating because of it.

‘Puny Little Life Form’ is about as slacker skater punk as you can get; it’s packed full of high-strung distortion, non-stop punk beats, and loaded with fuzzy nihilism. Main Cheap-Skate Blaike Murphy’s slacker-style vocals, though limited in range, are packed full of frustrated fun, and utilising the surf rock tropes of the wooing harmonies amp up the catchiness of the track. ‘Puny Little Life Form’ basically summarises the overall feeling of the latest jilted generation who really, at times, just want to do dumb shit - it’s what gives us all a break of the mundanity of everyday life.

The band explains the employed a heavy DIY ethic to dig deeper in to the surf rock tones, turning a living room in to a full home studio, spending days on end writing, recording, mixing, and ripping apart a slew of potential singles, with ‘Puny Little Life Form’ the first of the Gippsland band’s ‘new sound’

Of the single, frontman Blaike Murphy explains it came about after battling an array of different issues within himself and his mental health over time.

“There is a lot to unpack in the lyricism, even if it doesn’t seem to be all that much, but outside of the lyrics it’s backed by an upbeat fun, classic Cheap-Skate sound - hence the ling, ‘I like to do dumb shit,” he said.

Produced by DbTedd and Blaike, with mastering duties by Christopher Vernon, ‘Puny Little Life Form’ is the first in the next phase for Cheap-Skate.
