Brisbane's Among The Ruined delve into darkness with latest metalcore single, 'Common Creature'

Brisbane-based lords of metalcore, Among The Ruined delve deep in to our darkest states with their latest single, ‘Common Creature’, along with an accompanying music video.

The latest single is the title track from their forthcoming album, which was completely self-produced, and mixed by Justin Aufdemkampe (Miss May I).

‘Common Creature’, as hard and dark as it comes across at first, in particular with that thick, swinging guitar groove, does employ some tricky layers of synths that add a little air to this metalcore soup. This combination, blended with emotional vocal takes, gives some serious BMTH-meets-AFI vibes, that is until we hit the breakdown, which brings in a snaking build-up that pays off in such a dirty tech-metal grind. ‘Common Creature’ hits hard.

‘Common Creature’ explores the heavy topic of depression, in particular the deepest states, which can lead to self-loathing, and quite often is pushed aside.

“Lyrically Common Creature talks about the deepest state of depression Paddy has personally experienced. Depression is the common creature that lives within a lot of people, yet there doesn’t seem to be much communication about it with a lot of people holding it in and keeping it hidden. It expresses the guilt and shame he's felt being someone that he hates. Sinking deeper into this hole feeling like no one could care less, just to brush it off and say it’s not a big deal.“ - Among The Ruined

‘Common Creature’ follows on from previous single, ‘The Road’ which aired on 100 radio stations worldwide, and gave fans the first taste from their upcoming album released, as well as the band successfully touring the single in venues across Queensland.

‘Common Creature’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
