Brisbane’s PhD! kick off 2023, hitting us hard with a brand new track that will leave a mark in ‘Fresh Bruises’, following up their 2022 releases, ‘Swallowing Knives’, and ‘Tie-Dye’ (which took out number 16 in the 2022 4ZZZ Hot 100).

Since forming in late 2019, PhD! has been blitzing gigs all over Queensland and have become known for their insane live shows at which nothing is safe from jumping off…even audience members! “Fresh Bruises” shows a more mature side to the band that they didn’t get the opportunity to explore with their 2021 E.P “Keep Dreaming, Weirdo”.

‘Fresh Bruises’ sees PhD! utilising the frenetic pop punk tones of the late 90s/early 00s, and dragging them kicking and screaming into the 20s with Sydney’s femme fatale vocal take, bringing a smooth-yet-bratty delivery. There’s plenty of razor-sharp fuzz, and frenetic drumming throughout, with a cheeky breakdown for extra satisfaction. It’s yet another fun-fuelled punk track from PhD! that kicks you in the proverbials.

The Brisbane fun punks flip traditional punk music on its head with their take, adding a little more groove and shiny guitar solos into the mix of fuzz and beats, with Sydney’s lyrics tackling not wanting to grow up with songs about the struggles of changing for the ones you love without losing yourself in the process. It’s confusion, distortion, and tonnes of bounce in the process.

PhD! promise this is just the taste of what’s to come from the Brisband, with ‘Fresh Bruises’ already setting the bar high for the rest of the year.

‘Fresh Bruises’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
