Meanjin/Brisbane alt-rock sensations, Platonic Sex have shared their third and final instalment in the trilogy of 2023 singles in ‘Melon’; a track that sees vocalist/guitarist Bridget Brandolini (AKA Brando) in conversation with themself, wrapped in a collage of road rage, mindfulness, intrusive thoughts and self-soothing.

Produced and mixed by Bonnie Knight (Amyl & the Sniffers, Gretta Ray, Girl & Girl, Teen Jesus & the Jean Teasers) and mastered by Joe Carra (King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Courtney Barnett, Pond). ‘Melon’ is a fan-favourite from Platonic Sex’s live set.

‘Melon’ is power-drill fuzzy, slamming alt-punk that scuttles down the Bruce Highway at 3am, combining all the random thoughts of the day that blur with the bright lights of passing cars. The guitar hook is plucked straight from no-fucks-given 90s alt-rock soundtracks, while vocalist Bridget Brandolini’s delivery is dangerously playful. ‘Melon’ is Platonic Sex at their catchiest full pace; it’s hand-clapping, slam-dancing, pogo-ing goodness.

Platonic Sex will bring ‘Melon’ and 2023 singles ‘When I Come Home, I’ll Find a Hill to Die On’ and ‘Bitch in the Heat’ to  life with a headline performance on Friday, November 10 at Black Bear Lodge, Meanjin/Brisbane. The group will be joined by interstate crushes from Naarm/Melbourne – jangle-rock sweetheart Eaglemont and all-rizz no-breaks popstar Tamara Reichman, of Tamara & the Dreams – plus a handful of special guests including past Plats bassist Mikki Hain as DJ Keno Kowboy, with more to be announced closer to the show. Celebrate with Platonic Sex as they wrap up a year of hyped-up hits by securing your tickets HERE.

Best put in Brando’s words, “The stream-of-consciousness lyrics come from a note I’d previously written. It feels like a conversation with myself: impulsive Bridget speaking to the Bridget who goes to therapy, knows the strategies, but still needs to regulate the chaos of their inner voice at times. I experience impulsive, anxious and scattered thoughts, but I’m checking in with my body to see where those emotions sit. If I need to process something that’s going on in my life and I’m putting it off, the emotion will show up in unexpected ways, like road rage! Like, is it really about the traffic? Lol, I don’t think so.”

Vocalist and guitarist Jane Millroy shares, “I love playing Melon live. I get a clapping moment (love some audience participation) and I love to watch Brando shred that lead line, it makes me so happy!”, while vocalist and percussionist Ryan Hammermeister exclaims “I get sort of feral during ‘Melon’! It’s quick, hard, loud, and it’s the final sprint at the end of the set.”

Platonic Sex catapulted into 2022 with the release of their debut EP Grip, which saw them named as triple j Unearthed Feature Artist and win the Carol Lloyd Award at the 2023 Queensland Music Awards.

Despite the relatively short lifespan of the group, 2023 has been a year for the books. Over the past twelve months, Platonic Sex have accumulated more than their fair share of gigs to write home about, securing support slots alongside the likes of Angel Olsen, Jen Cloher, The Beths, TOPS, WAAX and Body Type, plus performing a string of packed-out performances at BIGSOUND, including a slot on Amazon Music After Hours’ PRIDE Party – their second consecutive year showcasing at the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest music industry showcase.

‘Melon’ is out now on all streaming platforms. Secure tickets to their headline show at Black Bear Lodge on Friday, November 10 HERE.
