Brisbane’s rising star, FELONY. is back, and bringing more of her take on the world as it stands, both online and in reality. Her latest single, ‘Oh Modernity’ brings more of her fresh upcoming perspective to pop music, and gives a taste of her debut EP, ‘Head. Lights. Jump. Start’.

Taking cues from Madonna, Caroline Polachek and The Japanese House to bring in the happy/sad nostalgic pop music realm, FELONY. teams up with Cody McWaters (King Stingray, The Chats, Selfish Sons) and Aidan Hogg (GFlip, Hatchie) on production duties.

‘Oh Modernity’ teeters between brilliantly bleak lyricism and sparkling pop, with FELONY. once again harnessing the fears and uncertainties of disaffected youth, and purging over super bouncy alt pop/rock. The track’s production is edgy and fresh, offset by sprinkles of 80s new wave nostalgia, all the while FELONY. vocally pouring youthful exuberance. ‘Oh Modernity’ is anxiety with a spring in its step - what better way to deal with the unpredictable nature of our place in this world than to dance it off?

Speaking of the track, FELONY. explains that ‘Oh Modernity’ is a song about change, uncertainty, growing up, breaking ties with friends and relationships, and struggling to move on.

“It's the feeling of trying to hold yourself and everything around you together for so long, but then eventually the rubber band breaking and falling into a hopelessness that leaves you turning to really unhealthy coping mechanisms and habits.

‘I was in a time where my life was turned by a massive wave of change. It all happened at once, out of nowhere, and it really freaked me out. Growing up is scary, and growing apart from people whether it be some of your closest friends, your family or someone you love is super scary too, especially when it's your first time experiencing it, like it is mine,” she said.

FELONY. goes on to discuss how the track pulled together.

‘I was in the middle of a downward spiral when I began to write ‘Oh Modernity’ and you can hear in the lyrics how it gets darker as the song progresses. I wrote most of the lyrics on the bus home, they came super quickly and I had no idea what to do with them musically. I went home and pulled up this super boppy electronic piece of music I had made a while back, which now is the chorus of ‘Oh Modernity’ and ended up building the track around that. I love nothing more than the juxtaposition of the major, bright and massive sounding music with the darker, intimate lyrics. I was listening to a lot of Madonna, Caroline Polachek and The Japanese House at the time, which I think are true masters of the happy/sad nostalgic pop music realm.

“I don’t know how to go about life in the ‘right’ way or the most ‘healthy’ way but also, I don’t know if anyone does, or if these constructs even exist. The struggle of being self destructive seems pretty universal, so I hope people can understand ‘Oh Modernity’ and take from it what they need to.”
