Newcastle's fuzzed-out alt rockers, The Cheaks return with thumping new single, 'Wildfire'
Newcastle’s fuzzed-out alt rock champions, The Cheaks have returned with an absolute belter of a single in the swaggy ‘Wildfire’ (via Mandatory Music). The fiery new track blends energy & chaos, capturing the turmoil of a toxic & inescapable relationship.
Following the success of their debut EP 'Sirens' - featuring tracks like 'Is This a Robbery', 'Misapprehension', & 'Starting Again' - the band has recorded five new songs, each a fresh take on their raw, signature sound, with 'Wildfire' leading the charge as the first single from their upcoming second EP (set to drop in August 2025).
Loaded with tub-thumping rhythm and fuzzy swagger, ‘Wildfire’ sees The Cheaks tap into their inner Kasabian, delivering a dark, swinging slice of indie rock with an unmistakable air of menace. It's a track built for big moments — from a chorus that practically demands a singalong, to a screaming guitar solo that cuts through the mix like a flare. The production is thick and muscular, pressing its full weight down on your chest in the best way. By the time it’s over, you’re left Oliver Twisting — begging for more.
Written by frontman Flynn Devon, in 2024 during a period of deep personal reflection, ‘Wildfire’ began as a live set heavy-hitter, before reimagined in the studio with Producer Jack Nigro (DMAs, Rum Jungle, The Terrys) at Sonora Studios.
While ‘Wildfire’ seems to be about a toxic or inescapable relationship with another person, the song, however, was created with an overarching view on obsession & addictions, whilst maintaining dyadic relationship connotations through its lyricism. ‘Wildfire’ refers to any form of an addictive yet toxic relationship with anything, one that keeps pulling the narrator back despite the paint & frustration it causes.
The repeated imagery of a ‘Wildfire’ suggests something uncontrollable, destructive & consuming, much like an emotional or passionate connection that the narrator can't seem to escape.
‘Wildfire’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
