smallways. find big sounds in debut alt punk debut EP, 'MIND YOUR HEAD'

Sydney bass and drum punk duo, smallways. are all about challenging mindsets and pushing boundaries with their experimental alt punk, and they’ve just come out swinging with their debut EP, ‘MIND YOUR HEAD’.

The new 4-track EP explores themes of impeding social structures, societal and cultural traditions, conversation for change, self-reflection and development, patterns of human behaviour, mental health conditions and working through it and the harsh reality of our shared world, which all contrasts with the beauty of life and existence.

Following the release of this debut EP, smallways. will release a part 2, six track EP, connecting as a full-length Debut LP, set for release later this year.

Chaotically fun and gloriously unhinged, MIND YOUR HEAD sees Sydney two-piece smallways. rip up whatever rulebook punk might’ve once had. Anchored in a primal core of bass and drums, they twist the genre into a noise-laced fever dream—experimenting with texture, tone, and sheer velocity without ever letting go of momentum.

From the fuzz-laced dance-punk lurch of ‘LEECHES’ to the warped, alternate-universe B-52’s strut of ‘COOL DOWN’, they hit hard and fast. ‘NERVE REMORSE’ swings like a wrecking ball, and closer ‘SPLIT’ goes full schizoid, snapping between moods with wide-eyed abandon.

It’s a 12-minute adrenaline dump—sweaty, breathless, and totally wild. smallways. might only be two people, but they summon the chaos of a five-piece smashing the walls of a basement gig to dust.

Kicking off at the start of 2023, smallways. gained fast and steady traction in the local and national music scene, offering a unique live performance and recording style, blending hip hop and punk rock beats with jarring, rigid and catchy bass riffs that are elevated with both Stevie’s and Teriece’s blend of melodic clean and distorted vocal.

The new EP is a personal expression of how smallways. understand, experience, engage and communicate in the worlds within them and around them. This EP represents observation and the experimental expression of their findings. The four songs interconnect and create a story. A story of frustration, repetition and limitation.

smallways. intend for their works to be challenging, confusing, harsh and uncomfortable, all while dance-able, energetic, comedic and immersive.

Following the release of their Debut EP, they’ve recorded a 6-track part 2, to connect as a full-length LP, for release later this year.

‘MIND YOUR HEAD’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
