Brisbane/Meanjin's Mid Drift give taste of debut EP with latest mesmerising single, 'Play Pretend'

Bursting with sun-soaked melodies and wavy guitar licks, Brisbane/Meanjin’s indie-rock sweethearts Mid Drift return with their newest single ‘Play Pretend’ - a taste of their debut EP to come later in the year.

Produced by Jack Nigro (produced previously for Rum Jungle, DMA’s, Pacific Avenue etc), 'Play Pretend' was recorded in January this year at Sonara Studios, the track has Mid Drift laying bare the reality of falling out of love and being true to yourself.

Mid Drift have developed a particular knack for creating divine coastal indie grooves, and ‘Play Pretend’ further extends this. Again, the indie rock outfit draws you in with enriched, sweeping grooves, almost to the extent of Lounge, before letting each part duck and weave in the pre-chorus until they all congeal into a thick, lush chorus. Wandering bass lines, borderline jazz drums, dreamy guitars and vocalist Sarah balancing between soft crooning and indie pop diva - it’s all wrapped up in a track that continuously washes over you. It’s indie rock that is dripping wet.

Vocalist and lyricist, Sarah, reveals “I think a crucial part of your twenties is being your most authentic self and also realising when you aren’t. I wrote the lyrics when I realised I couldn’t keep “playing pretend” in a relationship where I wasn’t being true to myself. I had this fear of letting life pass me by without truly living how I wanted to.“

The latest single is being released as a taster for their debut EP titled ‘Lemon, Lime and Tan Lines’ set to be released at the end of this year.

‘Play Pretend’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
