Hannah Stow visits post-breakup musings on beautifully visceral new single, 'Even Divide'
Western Australian Indie-Pop artist, Hannah Stow captures post-breakup awkwardness in her latest single, ‘Even Divide’; a beautifully visceral track about the experience of having to divide belongings in a break-up, and of feeling like you came out second best in the process.
Showcasing an exciting new side to Hannah’s musical skill set, ‘Even Divide’ leans a lot more towards an indie-Oz-rock style, in comparison to much of her previous acoustic and alt-pop repertoire. Speaking on fellow Australian pop-rock artists and icons, Stow felt that “the production [of ‘Even Divide’] is very G flip, and the lyrics are very Camp cope”, and expressed that they were “two of [her] major inspirations whilst writing this track.”
Written with a total sense of heart-wrenching directness and honesty on the matter, the track explores the ordeal of having to not only split up and fight for belongings and objects with an ex-partner, but for friends too: ‘You didn’t make our friends choose but you needed them more so they had to.’
‘Even Divide’ is a classic example of modern Australian Indie Pop-Rock; all you need is pop rock beats, slightly fuzzed guitar, unashamedly Australian vocal delivery, four chords and the truth. Hannah captures the awkwardness and unfairness of a relationship breakdown, shoved into a bottle, shaken up and let the fizz explode in a beautiful explosion of lyrical imagery. Hannah knows that we’ve all eaten dinner off of a barstool at some point in our lives. This is a magical slice of indie pop-rock, that is begging for a singalong (particularly in that bridge section).
On the subject matter at the core of the song, Hannah Stow wrote from a very vulnerable place, approaching a somewhat universal experience from a position much closer to home:
“I wrote this song on behalf of my current girlfriend. She went through a breakup prior to dating me where her ex took her dogs, the house and all her friends. I felt like this was super relatable and it's so common in breakups for someone to feel like they “lost the bet” or didn’t get an “Even Divide” of their belongings. The bridge is my favourite part ‘You don’t even clean but you kept the vacuum, you don’t feel the gravity of your actions, I don’t even understand when it happened, we missed the shift inside we were distracted’ I wanted this to punch through and when writing it I imagined a mosh pit of people screaming it at the top of their lungs.” - Hannah Stow
In the past, this WA alt-pop icon has seen plenty of support from the likes of triple j and triple j Unearthed, with airplay for previous tracks ‘Tell Him ‘Bout Us’ and ‘I Loved You First.’ In the wake of an exciting 2023 where she shared the stage with rapper 360, as well as embarked up on her own headline Australian tour, Stow is set for yet another incredible year, kicking off with an absolute bang in the form of this stunning new single. With 62.2K followers on TikTok and over 2.2 million all-time streams on Spotify, the only way is up for Hannah Stow.
‘Even Divide’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
