Ant Syms weathers the storm in latest epic, 'Double Edged Sword'
Sunshine Coast troubadour, Ant Syms returns with a hefty slab of progressive alternative folk rock, fused with plenty of theatrical flair in new single, ‘Double Edged Sword’, which is out now.
The new single expresses feelings of frustration, hopelessness and defeat, showcasing the dread that comes with the realisation you are owned by your vices. ‘The track brings forward that your life is full of triggers that send you running back to them like a baby to a breast. The vices make you feel better for now - but they are a ‘Double Edged Sword’, which also bring anxiety, depression, bad physical health, and bad choices.
‘Double Edged Sword’ is a swirling journey sailing over turbulent seas of organs and piano, shuffled under the steam of jazzified drums and bass, pushed along by gusts of saxophone. Ant directs you through the storm with theatric gusto, both vocally and with keys work, with all the pieces giving a hefty nod to Dark Side of the Moon-era Pink Floyd. It’s progressive without the bloat, even after clocking in over six minutes.
Ant talks about how the track came to life.
“I wanted to write a song in the vein of Pink Floyd’s “Us and Them” as I love the combination of the sax and the piano, (listen out for the sax solo in the outro) the big chorus and the theatrics. But it kind of took its own journey in the end. Which is always better anyway.”
‘Double Edged Sword’ was recorded and produced by the brilliant and calming Brian Goodsworth at Big Rock studios and a collective of fantastic musicians all over the coast and Brisbane, including Mitch Francis (Drums), Brendan Scully (Bass) and Ash Hutton (Saxophone) made the vision a reality.
‘Double Edged Sword’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
