Brisbane's Space Flamingo roll the dice and take a chance on epic fuzz rock opera single, 'Augury'
Brisbane-based rock auteurs, Space Flamingo take the listener on a journey through the depths of gameplay with their theatrical fuzz rock take, ‘Augury’, which is out now.
Drawing inspiration from a diverse array of artistic influences, Space Flamingo weaves intricate tales of mythology, science fiction, and fantasy into the fabric of their music. Their sonic landscape is influenced by Desert and Stoner Rock, Synthwave, Pop Punk, and Funk, resulting in a genre-defying sound that's both dynamic and electrifying.
‘Augury’ is fuelled by fuzzy dissonance, and takes a chance on heavy rock opera cinematics; the uneasiness created by the guitar and bass is a tool to create an air of mystery, supporting the fantasy/sci fi themes that float throughout the track. Imagine QotSA, Muse and The Darkness creating music to an intense round of Dungeons & Dragons and you get the gist. Space Flamingo roll the dice and inflict rock n roll damage with this track. ‘Augury’ is dramatic, quirky musical nerdery.
Carved out for a theme song to a Dungeons & Dragons podcast (Roll for Role), ‘Augury’ came together from a think tank by the band, discussing the themes of the game, and what makes them appealing. What the band took away was to create a track that explored ‘luck and fortune’, comradery/friendship, and to be just plain fun.
From there, ‘Augury’ was forged - the name being defined as a divination spell, which, when cast it will guide the player through 3 potential answers.
With the title and concept sorted they started drafting lyrics for a melody frontman Aaron (Griffiths) had pulled over to record (pulled over in this context meaning was driving and then stopped driving [No illegal behaviour here]). Coming up with the second verse first; “This weal (good fortune) this woe (bad fortune), my guidance will show you the way to survive.”
From there the band were entrenched in the identity of what the song was, and when it came to arranging it, the flood gates were open.
Debuting in 2021, Space Flamingo has quickly made its mark on the vibrant Brisbane Music Scene. Since their inception, the band has been steadily crafting their unique voice, sculpting their sound from a rich tapestry of influences. Taking notes from artists such as Queens of the stone age, Mastodon, Ghost, Anderson. Paak, 1000Mods, and Nothing but Thieves. What sets Space Flamingo apart is their narrative focus and a modern sonic aesthetic that's as bright and bold as their neon grunge visuals.
Space Flamingo will be taking ‘Augury’ on the road with them shortly, but in the meantime, take in the track now via all streaming platforms.
