Imogen Clark embraces 80s pop-rock charm on latest single, 'If I Want In'
Acclaimed indie-pop artist, Imogen Clark has released the first taste of forthcoming album (slated for early 2024 release) in the new single ‘If I Want In’ - a track that not only boasts Imogen’s 80s rock-pop charm, but also features members from Gang of Youths and guest vocals from Camp Cope’s Georgia Maq.
The new single, recorded at the world famous Abbey Road Studio 3 (home to The Beatles’ ‘Revolver’ and ‘Abbey Road’ albums, and Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon’), is about Imogen’s journey with music and how it’s taken her from Western Sydney, to the other side of the world. It’s a dedication to how her hometown made her who she is, but also made her realise that she had to leave it to achieve her dreams.
‘If I Want In’ embraces its Springteen-and-Benetar-isms, wearing its 80s songwriter rock stylings emblazoned like patches on a denim jacket. Super-slick, well-crafted, bombastic production oozes with charm, and for the audiophiles, there’s hidden easter eggs and cheeky nods to musical heroes of that era. That aside, Imogen Clark brings confident, powerful pop-rock vocals to match the story she tells through ‘If I Want In’ - if there’s dreams to achieve, you’ve got to give it all or nothing. ‘If I Want In’ gives a HAIM-ish spin to 80s classics - Imogen has delivered a bold, empowering nugget of pop-rock gold.
Raised on a cocktail of Bruce Springsteen and Violent Femmes, Imogen’s musical palette expanded with influences from contemporary artists like HAIM, Maggie Rogers, and the indomitable Taylor Swift. Her father, a former punk rocker and now retired high school teacher, also played a pivotal role in shaping her musical inclinations. His influence, combined with her own experiences, gave birth to a unique and timeless sound, blending pop-rock and indie-pop.
Imogen’s determination is evidenced by her achievements of the last three years, especially her two acclaimed EPs, 2020’s "The Making of Me" and the AIR-nominated 2021’s “Bastards".
The forthcoming album, proudly genre-agnostic, encapsulates Imogen’s range as a songwriter and recording artist. The lyrics are her most bracingly personal and vulnerable, the music more powerful and anthemic than ever. From navigating her identity to touching on the shadows of an eating disorder, each of Imogen's songs unfold like a chapter in a deeply personal diary, capturing moments, memories, and confessions from her journey.
It’s no wonder collaborators from Alex Lahey to Colin Hay to Steve Poltz to members of Gang of Youths, Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers, Elvis Costello’s Imposters, Dawes, My Morning Jacket and more have lined up to collaborate with an artist whose dynamism, relentless creativity and striving to be the most fully evolved version of herself, both in and out of the studio, shows her as a force to be reckoned with, and one who is just getting started.
Imogen also has two shows coming up for her Holiday Hootenanny, which is her version of an end of year celebration with guest artists joining her to perform her songs, their songs and one-off surprise covers.
Sydney's will take place on Nov 23 and features The Buckleys, Clews, Lindsay McDougall and Timothy James Bowden. Melbourne's will take place on Dec 9 and features Alex Lahey, Darcy Fox, Demi Louise, Eilish Gilligan, Jess Hitchcock and Katie Wighton.
