Adelaide's enchanting indie-folk family, Sturt Avenue release double singles, 'Against the World' and 'Still in Love'
Adelaide’s enchanting indie-folk family band, Sturt Avenue, have released two singles in the soul-stirring tracks, ‘Against the World’ and ‘Still in Love’. This musical endeavour marks a significant step towards the much-anticipated launch of their forthcoming sophomore album, ‘Bury Me in the Garden’, scheduled for release on November 23.
‘Against the World’ is an evocative track that explores the cost of indecision and the importance of embracing joy in one's life. It's a powerful reminder that life continues, with or without us, and it's essential to make decisive choices that lead to fulfilment.
On the other hand, ‘Still in Love’ offers a candid look at the emotional toll experienced by someone trying to maintain a connection with a past love. It confronts the reality of watching that person move forward while being relegated to the sidelines.
As a surprising twist, Sturt Avenue infuses ‘Still in Love’ with a dash of ska, pushing the boundaries of their indie folk sound. The brass section adds a vibrant energy reminiscent of Reel Big Fish, showcasing the band's versatility and willingness to explore new musical territories.
‘Against the World’ and ‘Still in Love’ are, tonally, flipsides of each other, yet both tackling similar themes, albeit from different angles. While ‘Against the World’ is close-sounding, almost like a your own private concert under a blanket fort, sweet and comforting, ‘Still in Love’ bursts with fun energy, like a packed, carefree backyard gig lit by fairy lights. Both tracks exude raw emotion, sweetly delivering the topics of loss; if their way of dealing with the grieving process is through upbeat ska-folk, and whimsical indie folk stylings, then we’re all for it.
Frontman Bryn sheds light on the distinct opposite journeys behind these two singles.
"In 'Still in Love', I poured raw emotions into lyrics devoid of metaphor. The band's playful arrangement, with ska-esque horns and guitars, adds a touch of irony to the heartfelt sentiment. It's an honest reflection of personal heartbreak.
In contrast, 'Against the World' took years to develop. The intricate guitar work and captivating hook were on hold due to my limited skills. It's a reflection on losing something special and the struggle to accept its absence."
‘Bury Me in the Garden’ is a poignant collection of songs that delve into the theme of endings and the impermanence of what once seemed everlasting. Composed primarily in the midst of the tumultuous year of 2020 and into early 2021, the album showcases the emotional depth and storytelling prowess of Bryn Soden, the band's SCALA award-winning singer/songwriter. It's a musical journey that speaks to the core of human experience, exploring themes of love, loss, and the nostalgia for moments that may have existed solely in memory.
Sturt Avenue's ‘Bury Me in the Garden’ is a heartfelt testament to the power of family bonds, cherished friendships, and the universal emotions that connect us all. The double single release of ‘Against the World’ and ‘Still in Love’ is a prelude to the album's full unveiling on November 23.
‘Against the World’ and ‘Still in Love’ are out now on all major streaming platforms.
