Sunshine Coast's Calan Mai returns with catchy, optimistic indie pop single, 'Man Made Lake'

Sunshine Coast-based singer/songwriter, Calan Mai is back with a brand new uplifting single in ‘Man Made Lake’. This is an indie singalong about fear, failure, and floating around.

‘Man Made Lake’ is musical serotonin; the ‘Yes Man’ of indie-pop goodness. It’s hard to not have positive vibes coursing through your veins when you are surrounded by Calan Mai’s infectiously happy concoction. Screw the woo-woo stuff, create a circle of speakers, crank ‘Man Made Lake’ and channel the optimism. Calan Mai has made a change of pace and approach with this new single, shifting away from the folk sounds, but at the same time, bringing some of the qualities, and merging with a more pop-friendly beat, lightly pulsing synths, and a guitar & bass line that play off each other. There’s a hint of Ben Lee sneaking in, giving a happily quirky feel, and boosting Calan’s fantastic, whimsical storytelling.

The track marks a high-energy turn toward full-band swagger for Calan Mai, with the single being a theme song for anyone who wears knee pads, and swims between the flags.

After years spent making folk music in the US and UK, Calan Mai is home—ready to rock (and potentially roll if conditions are right).

With help of producer/mixer, Peter Holz (Gang of Youths, Peking Duk), ‘Man Made Lak’e makes a perfect vehicle for Calan Mai’s storytelling: heartfelt, funny and a little bit bent! This is the first of his series of planned singles—all aimed at getting in your head, capturing your heart, and kicking you square in the balls.

So strap on a helmet and cover your soft bits because there’s more to come...

‘Man Made Lake’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
