Great Australian Bank bring nostalgia-heavy Aus Rock into the now with driving, optimistic single, 'Leaving'
Naarm/Melbourne post-punks, Great Australian Bank return with their new single (and music video), ‘Leaving’ - an upbeat energetic and optimistic track, hearkening to the past while feeling fresh.
Sparkling guitars, solid drums and bright vocals from the 80’s post-punk/Aus rock heyday; reminiscent of The Church, The Go-Betweens and Midnight Oil. These have become the hallmarks of the Great Australian Bank sound, and no track does it better than Leaving.
The new single features a heavy, palpable sound built on angular post-punk and guttural Aus Rock, and while the track has power, it remains decidedly melodic, accessible, and catchy.
Great Australian Bank channel everything brilliant about true Australian ’80s rock on “Leaving” — guitars drenched in chorus, drums echoing through warehouse-sized space, driving basslines, and those unmistakably ocker vocals that hit right where the nostalgia lives.
While plenty of Australian acts draw from punk-inflected legends like The Church, Midnight Oil, and The Saints, few have nailed the feel quite like Great Australian Bank do here. “Leaving” is a full-blown time warp for Gen X and elder millennials alike — yet it drags those long-lost sounds firmly into the present. It’s familiar, heartfelt, and just the right kind of throwback.
‘Leaving’ marks a new chapter for Great Australian Bank. Having built a solid catalogue of political diatribes, the band have traded their angst for melody, space and optimism. 'Leaving' holds up a mirror to the notion of being content in mediocrity - slowing down when you've soaked up your fair share of perspective through travels, transience and romance.
Likewise, it's a love letter to community and the people who stick around along the way.
‘Leaving’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
