Sunk Loto are back with their heaviest offering to date in new single, 'God Complex'
Australian alt metal legends, Sunk Loto return again after 2023 gifted the heavy scene with their unforgettable resurgence with their first new music in two decades in ‘The Gallows Wait’. A year later, and we have been blessed yet again, this time with Sunk Loto offering one of the heaviest cuts of their career in ‘God Complex’.
Opening with caustic brutality, God Complex seamlessly ignites between razor-sharp guitar-work, propulsive drums and bass-lines, and the gripping Jekyll and Hyde-like potency of frontman Jason Brown's clean and harsh vocal dexterity.
The metal deities have smiled once again on Australian heavy music, gifting us with an absolute mind-twisting, face-melting slab riffage from Sunk Loto in ‘God Complex’. The Forrester Savell touch is well and truly present on this new offering, with an absolute pummelling from a wall of guitar and drums that shifts from relentless thrash, melding into a gooey-yet-sharpened groove, all allowing Jason Brown’s vocals to bend and blend from guttural to melodious goodness. There’s a whole chunk of prog thrown in for good measure, almost cheekily giving a nod to the ‘vool at the two thirds mark. Return single, ‘The Gallows Wait’ was great, but ‘God Complex’ is bloody brilliant.
Produced by Forrester Savell and engineered by Luke Palmer, ‘God Complex’ is a resounding reflection of the stacked Sunk Loto arsenal, while also cementing the fact that somehow after all these years and successes along the way, time has only fortified the Sunk Loto creative psyche; and the best continues to be yet to come.
"2024 has not been without its challenges for us working to get music out to our fans, but we are extremely excited to be on the other side of that now starting with finally releasing our new song God Complex," shares the band. "This one sees us throwing down with some of the heaviest sounds we’ve ever done and shows the best of what we do wrapped up in one song. We know we made you wait a while for this but we’re sure it’s going to be worth it.”
Staging a monumental rebirth in 2022, Sunk Loto spent 2023 celebrating the album that changed the game, with the quartet commemorating the 20th anniversary of their 2003 opus ‘Between Birth and Death’ with a huge Australian tour.
If you had to list the most important heavy Australian albums of all time, it’s likely that Sunk Loto’s 2003 release ‘Between Birth and Death’ would be near the top, with metal aficionados still declaring the band one of the most influential Aussie heavy bands of all time. Peaking at #48 on the ARIA Albums Chart, with engineer Paul McKercher snagging an ARIA nomination for his work on the album the following year, ‘Between Birth and Death’ had remained Sunk Loto's second and seemingly final album - that is, until now.
Having previously toured the globe alongside the likes of Korn, Linkin Park, A Perfect Circle, Suicidal Tendencies and Sevendust, with festival appearances also under their collective belts including Big Day Out, Homebake, Vans Warped Tour and Splendour In The Grass, Sunk Loto swiftly became synonymous with Australian metal while most members were still in their teens. And following their triumphant return in 2022 wowing sold out crowds across Australia after 15 years of silence, it’s clear that the best is truly only yet to come for the group who helped paved the way for the modern Australian heavy music renaissance.
