Melbourne's Bad Juju evolve from grunge to industrial-tinged heavy rock with massive new single, 'The Other Side'
Melbourne’s Bad Juju shift into a new era, evolving from their grunge rock sounds into a more massive, mechanical tone, starting with their powerful new single, ‘The Other Side’.
The band draw from their heavier roots and extend into the electronic, melding into a stadium-ready amalgamation of drop-tuned fretwork, pounding riffs and vibrant synths. Juxtaposing the upbeat instrumentation with introspective lyricism, the single explores the devastating effect of negative thinking when a person is trying to change for the better.
Bad Juju’s super thick fuzz, and massive grunge hooks have had the potential (for the previous recent releases) to merge into the electronica/industrial realm, and we finally see that in ‘The Other Side’. The walls of guitar are ever present, the drums bludgeoning as always, and frontman Russel Holland’s vocals are bigger than before, but now with the synth extensions, the looseness of the grungy tones moves aside for something more methodical, heavier, colder and intense. We saw this post-grunge movement adopt electronica at the turn of the millennium, and we’re due for a second coming.
The Other Side is a compelling testament to the power that music holds in helping listeners navigate complex emotions that will linger in their hearts long after the song has finished. Frontman Russell Holland shared: “We spent months in the studio and came up with something special. We’ve made something completely fresh and think these songs will really surprise a lot of people.”
Recorded, mixed and mastered by Sam Bassal (Ocean Grove, Trophy Eyes) and featuring additional guitars by Callan Orr (Hands Like Houses, Dream on Dreamer), this bouncy post hardcore track with industrial flair is clear evidence that the band know their way into the future of heavy music.
Bad Juju entered into the spotlight in 2017 with all guns blazing, creating hard-hitting 90s inspired grunge rock. The band have cut their teeth on the live circuit alongside some impressive names, including most recently Boston Manor (UK), Movements (US) and Loathe (UK) as well as Mayday Parade (US), Trophy Eyes, Dream On Dreamer, Columbus and a hard-earned performance at BIGSOUND in 2018.
Powerhouse single, In the Clouds saw the band go from strength to strength, scoring additions to Spotify and Apple Music playlists and securing a highly prized slot as feature artist on ABC’s RAGE.
Working tirelessly to create music to remember, the band will return with new music... sooner than you think.
The Other Side is available and streaming everywhere now.
