Brisbane's Rhino deliver a 'Psychic Mess' of brilliant heavy rock to blow your mind.
Brisbane’s Rhino sure know how to make your mind a gooey mess with their layered, heavy alternative rock, and they’ve delivered again with third single, ‘Psychic Mess’.
Thirteen months since their last release, ‘White Witch’, the 2021 Queensland Music Award Finalists (for the Heavy category) have waded through the swampy crapfest that was 2020, and come out the other end having again teamed up with Lucius Borich (COG) in the producer’s/engineer’s chair, with mastering done by Tony ‘Jack The Bear’ Mantz (Nick Cave, Silverchair, You Am I).
‘Psychic Mess’ shifts from downright Southern Metal groove, into almost 70s-inspired prog rock, with a middle section that tricks you with some thick tub-thumping, only to change into a cheeky shaker-and-funk guitar overlay. Your body won’t know whether to head bang or shake your rump.
Of the track, vocalist Simon Benson said that the band were after a slight shift in a sonic direction when bringing the song to life.
“The title and concept for Psychic Mess comes from seeing how a situation will unfold whilst being helpless to affect the outcome. Teaming up again with Lucius Borich we wanted to pursue a more groove-oriented rock sound compared to our previous releases which are more 4 on the floor hard rock. We enlisted Tony “Jack The Bear” Mantz at Deluxe Mastering who really helped round out the sound we were looking for.” - Simon Benson, Vocalist
Rhino sprang to life in 2019, quickly cementing themselves in the Australian Heavy Music scene with the debut single, ‘Afterlife’, an East Coast Tour, and a support for Australian prog rock legends, COG for two Queensland shows.
During the recording of the band’s second single, ‘White Witch’, Rhino stepped away from the studio to support Wolfmother, after frontman Andrew Stockdale caught Rhino live at their Sydney show and offered them main support.
This chance encounter now sees Rhino being announced as the main support for Wolfmother’s entire upcoming East Coast Tour.
‘Psychic Mess’ is out now on all digital streaming platforms.
