The Butterfly Effect offer up brand new, aggressive and brutally honest single, 'Nil By Mouth'

Australian Heavy/Prog Rock royalty, The Butterfly Effect follow up on previous release, ‘So Tired’, with the brand new, aggressive single, ‘Nil By Mouth’ – a brutally honest exploration into the pitfalls of the internet, celebrity culture, reality television and exploitation.

‘Nil By Mouth’ is a monumental follow up to 2021’s ‘So Tired’, a track which features the same kind of biting societal commentary, set to a heavy, pounding instrumental. It’s an intriguing second offering from what is set to be an all-time album from The Butterfly Effect, set to drop later this year.

The Butterfly Effect have shown with ‘Nil By Mouth’, that there’s plenty left to be said after two decades of music. It’s shows a band that has explored the boundaries of their sound, and have returned to where it all began. The production has less-polish than the last full-length offering (2008’s Final Conversation of Kings), which allows for an ultra-aggressive tone from both (guitarist) Kurt and (bassist) Glenn. Massive, pumped-up drums from Ben Hall attack like heavy artillery, and vocalist Clint Boge allows his vocal cords to tear a little, before settling back in to the sublime delivery TBE fans are accustomed to. If you were expecting the more epic, progressive sounds from Imago, FCoK, you may need to wait for the album (unless 2019’s ‘Unbroken’ makes an appearance). ‘Nil By Mouth’ is raw, angry and oh so ready for the mosh pit.

In the modern COVID-era, we have seen epic releases from most of the big four of Australian Heavy/Progressive Rock, with Cog, Karnivool, and now The Butterfly Effect (your move, Dead Letter Circus), and it would appear the majesties of Oz prog rock have a lot to say.

‘Nil By Mouth’ has exactly the kind of attitude that many will relate to, as vocalist Clint Boge gives an insight into the inspiration behind the song, “Nil By Mouth represents the world’s obsession with fame at any cost. It’s also about the absolute craziness we see on TV all the time – humans behaving badly, the drama, murder, death, rape, torture – and that’s just on the 5 o’clock news! And that’s before we even get to social media – bullying, pornography, invasions of privacy, people at each others’ throats all the time – it’s just the tip of the iceberg. We are being constantly bombarded with the worst that human kind has to offer.” It is heavy content, and ‘Nil By Mouth’ captures the perfect blend of exasperation, anger, and passion for change – all while rocking hard like only The Butterfly Effect can.

And rocking hard is exactly what is in store for TBE throughout 2022 – the band are booked and busy, hitting stages across the country in celebration of their new music. An album is on the horizon – no release date as yet, but if these two singles are anything to go by, it’s set to be a massive one, as Clint says, “It’s nothing short of amazing that we have a new album in the works…We are absolutely loving the journey and being able to present new music to everyone.”

When it comes to the live shows, it won’t just be all about the new stuff, either – fans can expect a bumper setlist, full to the brim of classic TBE hits and their new tracks as well, as lead guitarist Kurt Goedhart laughs, “There will be a few old ones and a few new ones, all delivered with furious passion!” Clint agrees, “We are really looking forward to the shows. It’s going to be great to get out there and play after so long…it’ll be like we never left.”

The beloved group are set to hit Queensland stages in February, playing Leichardt Hotel Rockhampton on the 24th, Kings Beach Tavern Caloundra on the 25th and finishing the run of shows at Wallapalooza at the Mudgeeraba Showgrounds on Saturday February 26.
