Seph Cove releases heavily immersive sophomore EP, 'Unsafe Passage'

A much-anticipated sophomore EP has rolled in like a late afternoon summer storm in the shape of Seph Cove’s ‘Unsafe Passage’ - a release filled with light and dark, it is an EP that is immersive, with Seph’s songwriting painting sonic tapestries with ease.

He hooked us in with lead single, ‘Sirens’, with its rich production, that changes simple guitar strums and Seph’s distinct vocal delivery, to an almost Celtic-inspired flip half-way through. ‘Helen’ continued the flow with a personal message conveyed through song, that is both haunting and hopeful. ‘Cold’ has a slight country/pop feel, with a soft, pulsing shuffle, telling the story of meeting someone, that in Seph’s words, ‘made me feel warm again’. The fourth track, and focal-piece of ‘Unsafe Passage’ is the multi-faceted ‘August’. With layers of vocals, creating a Cove Chorus, it is deep in both sound and contextually, with the track focusing on one of the hardest relationships that all people face; that with oneself. EP closer, ‘Weigh Your Love In’ piles on the emotion, and lets Seph’s vocals truly take flight. The scrapped strings add a level of anxiety, but it is the warm piano tones and Seph’s performance that become an embrace for the listener.

‘Unsafe Passage’ has clever contradictions, both lyrically and sonically, giving feelings of optimism and comfort, while at the same time able to keep us in a vulnerable, and at times, hopeless position. It is calming and uplifting, yet with handfuls of sorrow.

Delving mercifully into the deep waters of the human condition and what it is to encounter disconnect, while ultimately finding a way back to love and an unbridled capacity for human connection. "This EP is a journey through my mind, at a time when my mind wasn’t always somewhere I wanted to be. These songs are the experiences I gained in perspective, support, and embracing the highs and lows of life," explains Seph.

Unsafe Passage was produced with longtime collaborator, Tim Bettinson of Vancouver Sleep Clinic and mixed and mastered in partnership with, audio engineer, Luke Jenkins (Vancouver Sleep Clinic).

After a year of nomadic wander, and self-reflection, Seph found himself unexpectedly rooted in the creative mecca of, Byron-Bay. Since his arrival, he has been pulling crowds to intimate shows at The Little Poet Bookstore, Byron Bay. And had supporters swooning at private balcony gigs - building the community and connections his previous contemplation yearned for. At ease on the stage, Seph has played a variety of sold-out hometown shows as the headliner and supported fellow singer-songwriter Budjerah on his sold-out Melbourne shows.
