BIGSOUND SPECIAL - WA's South Summit flow in to groove-packed roots single, 'Promise Me'
Having already looped around the country on their debut headline tour, WA’s South Summit have now released the next chapter with the slick, rolling new single, ‘Promise Me’. Awash with reverb, the new track blends groove-laden rhythms with vocalist Isaiah Reuben’s soulful voice, exploring feelings of excitement when falling for the rebellious and idiosyncratic side of someone new.
Conceived in 2021 during an evening jam, the band returned to trusted & acclaimed producer Dave Parkin (Spacey Jane, Tired Lion) to workshop, fine-tune and piece ‘Promise Me’ together.
‘Promise Me’ is slinky, slick groove roots, that shifts and slides between floating, wah/tremolo-heavy roots-indie flows, into big rock moments. Western Australia has been flying the flag proudly for the ‘Coastal Roots’ sound that started in Sydney with the likes of early Sticky Fingers and Ocean Alley, making its way through the East Coast, before bouncing over to the West, and South Summit join the ranks of contemporaries DICE and King Blue with their own take on this genre. It’s the smooth vocal takes and accompanying harmonies that grab your attention and keep there, with support from tight, rounded rhythm section, and plenty of guitar washing on both sides. Tracks like ‘Promise Me’ show that South Summit are a band ready to step up and take on the real big shows.
The single was aptly released in NAIDOC Week, with the band having been tagged by triple j as ‘indie rock role models for reconciliation’. South Summit has continue to grow in comfort with exploring their indigenous and multicultural heritage, maturing alongside each milestone. This progression permeates their music and their work amongst communities.
Their musical contributions have been noted and rewarded with two showcases at this year’s BIGSOUND event, with South Summit appearing at Blute’s Bar on opening day (Tuesday September 6th) at 10.30pm to 11pm, and followed by a Wednesday slot at The Warehouse from 9.50pm to 10.20pm.
The BIGSOUND appearances are a short stop in their current East Coast tour which is well underway, and takes the group from the Sunshine Coast, through to Byron Bay, and further down the coast down to Sydney, around to Melbourne, and finishing with a home show in Perth on September 24th.
“This trip over east is definitely the most exciting thing that we have booked so far and we are keen to get back on the road. We are all stoked to go on another one after our recent Tired of Waiting Australia Tour in May/June. We are returning to Sydney, Melbourne and Byron, but adding debut dates in Sunshine Coast, Wollongong and Caringbah, with new venues in all cities. We are also playing at Springtime Festival in the Gold Coast, another huge achievement as it’s another festival in 2022 with some of Aussie’s best live acts.” -South Summit
Having found their feet with previous singles ‘Tired of Waiting, ‘Runaway’ & ‘River Days’, South Summit are now beginning to flex their creative muscle & let their bighearted actions soar. Balancing sparkling indie-rock with hints of reverb & reggae, the band are launching ‘Promise Me’ to eagerly awaiting audiences across Australia.
‘Promise Me’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
To help get in to the BIGSOUND spirit, the crew from South Summit have given us their top 5 acts to check out over the festival
Death By Denim: Coming from the West Coast, Death by Denim are definitely a band to watch at Bigsound. Their Alt-Indie style and high energy performances won't disappoint. A good group of lads who are versatile with their sound, they are definitely a band you "must see" at Bigsound 2022.
Old Mervs: Old Mervs are another WA band killing it right now in that surf-indie rock genre and are one of our top picks for Bigsound 2022. We first saw these guys at our debut festival appearance at Out of the Woods a few months ago. They were about an hour after us so we got to catch their set, and they had a very good live energy and had an awesome turnout. Be sure to catch their showcases at this year's Bigsound!
Mitch Santiago: Mitch Santiago, another WA artist you "must see" at Bigsound. The young lad from Perth has been growing immensely and has been killing it in the music scene. A self-taught multi-Instrumentalist who writes catchy tunes is someone you need to catch at Bigsound 2022.
Dulcie: Dulcie, the 3-piece Indie-pop band from WA are ones to lookout for at Bigsound. Their creativity and melodic harmonies caught our eye in 2019. Good vibes, great people and superb songwriting is what the girls bring, they are definitely a band you must see at Bigsound 2022.
Mali Jose: Mali Jose is an upcoming hip hop and r&b artist from Fremantle who's been making a name on the west coast. He's one of the most versatile artists i know, even dabbling in the alternative scene so you never know what ya gonna get from his next release. His persona is very much Freo and he embraces the culture through his sound and style. I think he'll turn a lot of heads this year at Bigsound '22
