WA's Big Orange tease sophomore album with latest trip-hop meets alt rock single, 'This Won't Hurt A Bit'
One of Western Australia’s (no longer) hidden rock secrets, Big Orange adopt ear-worming pop sensibilities with their slick, rollicking, energetic rock take on their latest single, ‘This Won’t Hurt A Bit’.
Along with the new single, Big Orange announce the upcoming arrival of their sophomore album, ‘The Perils of Desire’ - due for release in August 2024.
‘This Won’t Hurt A Bit’ drags the more experimental side of alternative rock from the 90s into the now, with Big Orange utilising the massive sampled-style drum tones used by trip hop greats like Massive Attack, Tricky, and Moby, and merging with a more driving pop synths that shift tonally- the verses steeped in melancholy, while the choruses bathe in light. Bringing to mind more out-there cuts from the late 90s like Primitive Radio Gods, The Doves, and Bran Van 3000, Big Orange surpass genre pigeon-holes, and offer up big beat alt pop rock with substance.
Grounded in driving rhythm, built upon by grandiose layers of string-sounding synths and atmospheric guitar, This Won’t Hurt A Bit is a lush sonic scape, fused by Daniel’s raw, poignant vocals and existential lyricism “There was a fire in your eyes, slowly dying inside, lie awake and wonder why, you’re not the only one, through the labyrinth of life and all the horrors it holds, It drains your bones and haunts your dreams and it destroys you”.
He explains “this is a song about my deep insecurities. It came from my dark subconscious, and the trepidation of the world in which I was cast. I think many people could relate to this”.
Reminiscent of the 90s trip hop movement: Portishead, Massive Attack, Moby. All the while keeping consistent with the Big O rock sound and style, This Won’t Hurt A Bit was recorded by Davis at his home studio, then taken to Dave Parkin at Blackbird Sound Studios, Perth and mastered by Brain Lucy at Magic Garden, NYC.
A massive, multi-faceted track, rich in 90s nostalgia, ‘This Won’t Hurt A Bit’ is out now on all streaming platforms, and keep an eye out for the album, ‘The Perils Of Desire’ later this year.
