Melbourne's LOSER continue stellar rise with riffed-out new single, 'Hold On You'
Melbourne’s new kings of alt-rock, LOSER continue the release of their innovative ‘Netflix-style’ EP, with the brand new single, ‘Hold On You’.
It’s another track that maps out the new LOSER, who have flipped the traditional EP release model on its head with ‘Stadium Dreams On A Bedroom Budget’. ‘Hold On You’ follows on from the very Fooey’s-sounding ‘Heaven Can Wait’, setting expectations high for the remainder of the EP.
‘Hold On You’ treads proudly in to alt-rock ballad territory, finger-plucked guitar fills the verses, before building with teaser of a pre-chorus, which inevitably moves in to a harmony-fuelled chorus. Tim Maxwell of Loser cites Aerosmith as an influence on this track, and it is stamped all over ‘Hold On You’. If there’s anyone in Australia brave enough to tackle and replicate a Tyler/Perry vocal, AND pull it off, it’s these guys. It’s melodic contemporary alternative, wrapped up in cheesy stadium rock goodness, and we’re all here for it.
Tim Maxwell further expands on the themes explored in the new single.
“This is probably my favourite song on the EP. I started listening to heaps of Aerosmith and this song just fell out in one day. Usually the songs that take less effort are the ones I think are special because your consciousness is running in a way unlike any other. This song is about having a deep connection with another human being who you never want to let go of,” he said.
With well over 2 million streams across previous releases, support slots for Violent Soho, Ruby Fields, British India, Bugs, Slowly Slowly and more, the band have also graced the stages of iconic Festivals like Falls Festival, BIGSOUND 2022, The Hills are Alive, Beer InCider and Til’ The Wheels Fall off.
“The whole idea with this EP was to switch up how we've released music in the past. We've always been a traditional album band, but this new EP felt like a fresh direction for us musically, so we thought it could be fun to try something a little different in the way we presented it. It's not a collection of singles, it's more like a netflix tv series, where the entire body of work is designed to flow as a whole, but is presented piece by piece.” LOSER
‘Hold On You’, was recorded at Restless Noise Studios, the band’s own home studio. The track was produced by band members Craig Selak and Tim Maxwell, the latter of whom also mixed. To close out the team, the track was then mastered by George Georgiadis at Little Wing Sound (The VANNS, Gang Of Youths).
Since their inception in early 2018, LOSER have been forced to adapt to an ever changing and turbulent time. They released two full albums during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, both ‘Mindless Joy’ and ‘All The Rage’. The former received a long list nomination for the Australian Music Prize and the latter nominated for ‘Punk Album of the Year’ in the 2022 AIR Awards. Both albums garnered attention from triple j with singles ‘On The Edge’ and ‘Skyward’ receiving full add rotations alongside a slew of high praise from media outlets.
This new project ‘Stadium Dreams on a Bedroom Budget’ continues the mapping of the new evolution of LOSER, who have emerged more in touch with themselves and their music than ever before.
‘Hold On You’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
