Gold Coast (Yugambeh/Kombumerri)’s multi-award winning misfits, SELVE - led by proud Jabirr Jabirr man Loki Liddle - have dropped another fierce alt gem in their latest track, ‘Desire’, while also announcing their next EP, ‘Breaking Outta Heaven’.
The next EP becomes a companion release to their history-making internationally-praised 2025 album, ‘Breaking Into Heaven’: the first LP by an Aboriginal artist ever to be recorded at Abbey Road Studios in history.
The announcement comes alongside headline tour dates across so-called QLD, VIC & NSW this Jun-Aug following a support slot with Playlunch, a festival season marked by high-energy appearances at Spilt Milk, Lost Paradise, St. Kilda Festival and ahead of their previously-announced 20-date EU/UK tour kicking off next week - all dates below.
The EP expands the album's prismatic universe with adventurous new colours and thrilling spaces in the band's uniquely playful-yet-esoteric way - Liddle explains, "we broke into heaven - [which] may indeed just be a big old trap we’ll need to wrestle our way out of in the end". To celebrate the announcement, Selve share riff-heavy crowd favourite single 'Desire' and its one-take video - a heavier wielding of the more grittily-textured sound the band embraced with previous single 'Creature of the Night', as Selve continue to deliver the clever, high-drama sonic turns they've become celebrated for. Breaking Outta Heaven EP - also set to include recent triple j Unearthed-added single 'Creature Of The Night' - is out Friday 19 June - pre-order/save HERE.
‘Desire’ is a feral, fuzz-drenched alt-rock rush from SELVE that plays like a full-blown fight over the aux cord mid-road trip. It swerves between ’90s alt-radio chaos, ’70s groove, and flashes of yacht rock smoothness, somehow holding it all together in one blistering package. Loki Liddle leans into shades of Iggy Pop without losing his own bite, his vocal swagger cutting cleanly through the track’s funk-laced crunch. Everything’s dialled up to 11, but it’s that searing, hair-metal-tinged solo around the 1:58 mark that really sends it over the edge—pure, unapologetic excess, and pure guilty pleasure moment.
Like the songs on Breaking Into Heaven - which were anchored and inspired by Nina Simone's immortal words that "The people who built their heaven on your land, are telling you that yours is in the sky" - a punk heart beats inside wild alt-rock cut 'Desire', boldly encouraging listeners to "fight for what [you] value and believe in", embracing love as "the fire of the spirit". Punchy, sensuous, electronic rock driven by fierce, untamed drums and giant riffs as the track battles its raw synths and lead guitar against each other, 'Desire' pumps rhythmically around Liddle's enticingly luxuriant vocals and enigmatic, evocative lyricism - the band's Creation Saffigna providing ecstatic BVs and bassist Scott French's hedonist production providing a pop polish. It lands alongside a joyously dizzying one-take video directed by the award-winning Joshua Tate (they/them) with Cody Wood on DP and colour duties - resulting in the vibrant latest entry to the Selve Cinematic Universe or SCU.
Liddle shares: "'Desire' is an absolute favourite of ours, we play it at almost every gig despite it not being on [Breaking Into Heaven] and it's often a crowd favourite. It rocks, it is really fun, and it is basically just about that fire that gets you going out there in the world - fighting for what you value and believe in, fighting to bring a dream to life, or maybe giving absolutely everything for the person you love. Far from being the root of all suffering, desire is life force and the fire of the spirit. I hope 'Desire' gives people full permission to drop into their highest frequency and just fucking go for it. Chase your dreams despite your parents concern, ask that cute person out on a date, be who you are loudly and proudly and be willing to burn the hedges of the maze down on your way to your answer.”
Comprised of five tracks across the alt/rock/pop/psych spectrum, recorded between Midnight Special Records in the French countryside and during Selve's historic turn recording at Abbey Road's infamous Studio 3, the Breaking Outta Heaven EP continues building on the band's endlessly tantalising yet subversive-as-ever sound, lore and ethos. Drawing sonic inspiration from a range of acts like Jungle, Fcukers, Depeche Mode, Jack White, Air and more, the EP's closer features lush live orchestral instrumentation via the 33-piece Australian Session Orchestra recorded at the band's sold-out Breaking Into Heaven album preview spectacular at HOTA last year.
Expanding the prismatic universe of Breaking Into Heaven (2025) - anchored by Nina Simone's words that "The people who built their heaven on your land, are telling you that yours is in the sky" - with new, intriguing colours and thrilling spaces in the band's uniquely playful-yet-esoteric way, the Breaking Outta Heaven EP asks what comes next when that "grand goal in the sky" has been achieved, if the goal of Breaking Into Heaven itself may have been a trap all along - harking back to the album's interrogation of colonialism and war, and questions of what it means to be in legacy spaces as an Aboriginal-led band, with Liddle drawing from his forthcoming poetry work Damn Good Television (out this year via Magabala Books) across both releases.
Selve - Jabirr Jabirr man Loki Liddle (Lead vocals/Guitar - he/him), Anaiwan man Reece Bowden (Lead Guitar - he/him), Creation Saffigna (Vocals - she/they), Michael Baldi (Drums - he/him), Scott French (Bass Guitar/Production - he/him) and Liam Kirk (Keyboards - he/him) are a powerhouse alt-rock outfit carving their own rare path, literally making history at every turn and continuing to cement their immersive, spectacularly engaging live reputation.
Following their Breaking Into Heaven national tour and sold-out 700pax album pre-release spectacular at HOTA with the Australian Session Orchestra, 2025 saw them support Barkaa, Winston Surfshirt, Velvet Trip, appear at SXSW Sydney, Lost Paradise and more before a red-hot start to 2026, with the band securing support slots for Playlunch, Radium Dolls, Velvet Trip, festival appearances atSpilt Milk via triple j Unearthed, St. Kilda Festival, Perth Festival, Psyched As and more. Selve claimed the Gold Coast Music Award for Best Video ('Breaking Into Heaven') last year, are nominated for the Rock Award and Video Award at tonight's QMA's, and won the Gold Coast Music Award in 2021 with a nomination for the QMusic Billy Thorpe Scholarship in the same year.
‘Desire’ is out now on all streaming platforms, with ‘Breaking Outta Heaven’ releasing on June 19th.
