Brisbane's sunbleached explore dizzying anxiety in heavy alt/shoegaze single, 'Spinning Around'
Brisbane’s sunbleached delve into heavy emotive alternative rock with the moody new single, ‘Spinning Around’, which is out now.
What began as voice memos exchanged between vocalist Josh Baker and guitarist Bradley Maddaford soon became an exciting new leap forward for the band, with the song exploring the cycle of anxiety and the process of second guessing peoples’ motives.
‘Spinning Around’ is guitar-thick, scraped-knee, heavy emo wrapped up in shoegaze, and rubbed in the dirt for good measure. The grunge tones run thick, but there’s plenty of post-hardcore seeping from the pores of this track from sunbleached. The layering of distorted and fuzzed guitar tones leaves little breathing room, but that’s the whole point; ‘Spinning Around’ conjures the drowning helplessness of paranoia and anxiety, and exorcises the demons through the heavy drum tones, buzzing bass, delayed, razored and flanged guitars, and vocalist Josh Baker’s slacker anthem vocals.
sunbleached encapsulate the retro shoegaze aesthetic on this new track, with Baker explaining "the song describes a sort of self sabotaging mantra that we can probably all get ourselves into, and Spinning Around serves as an effort to be mindful of that, and acts as a reminder to remember the good in others when the worst is on show."
"Spinning Around" was a labour of love, produced and mixed by Tristan Higginson (Waxflower). With Higginson's guidance and partnership, the new tune soars above the bands previous work and makes a bold statement of things to come, reinstating sunbleached's commitment to always bettering themselves and their sound.
The band comprises of members from previous well-known music projects, that after winding down, allowed sunbleached to set out in 2020 to create a fresh and authentic alternative rock project which rips inspiration from decades past, reimagined for the present.
The sonic influence on sunbleached's musical fingerprint is broad and exciting, ranging from grunge greats like Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Silverchair all the way though to more modern influences like Citizen, Basement, and Nothing.
With the return of live music, the new year has seen sunbleached perform alongside the likes of Holding Absence (UK), Void of Vision, Pridelands, Dregg and Waxflower to name a few, gaining the backing of booking agency Destroy All Lines. In support, the band jumped up to perform at BIGSOUND 2022 Festival at the Destroy All Lines showcase. "Spinning Around" holds the promise of more to come.
‘Spinning Around’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
