Punk is a live and well on the Australian scene - and it will continue to bubble and spit in these times of self-isolation, and controlled crowd capacities.
Just before the world went in to meltdown, Amyl & the Sniffers made their way to the Sunshine Coast to headline Solbar, snarls, sweat and all, and brought Mini Skirt and Ascot Stabber to the fight.
The Sunshine Coast has become home to some epic music festivals, spread out over the area, with Caloundra Music Festival, Big Pineapple Music Festival and more… and you can add travelling festival The Drop to that list. Photographer Chris Clow went along to capture all the happenings at The Drop Festival in Noosa on February 29.
Sun, surf and music are the fundamental elements to the Sunshine coast lifestyle, so it comes to no surprise when the 3 are fused together, it creates an unparalleled vibrance that is, ‘The Drop festival’.
Stopping by Solbar on December 14, The Beasts were in full rock’n’roll force, playing on one of the hottest Saturday’s we’ve encountered in a long time… or maybe it was The Beasts that brought the heat? Supported by the legendary Adalita (Magic Dirt), and Gravel Samwidge.
Oh my. So much sweat, hair and goddamn rocknroll in one big night that saw 5 bands crammed onto a line-up at Solbar. Celebrating Big Whoops’ debut EP release (and drummer Rangi’s birthday), the stage was drenched on a cold August night. Supported by Byron Bay’s WHARVES (having just released a single, ‘Blame’), Brisbane’s Walken, and locals Muules and Zebrafinch, we sent photographer Cynthia Lee to capture all the sweaty, hairy gloriousness.
This year marks 10 years of The Point Music News delivering all the Sunshine Coast music news, gigs, upcoming artists, new releases, and incoming tours. It’s been a hard slog, but we’ve been privileged to see amazing acts grow and take on the national stage.
To celebrate this achievement, we threw the mother of all Point Parties on July 5 at Solbar - home to many a gig witnessed by The Point - and we invited some of our friends, old and new, along to kick it up a notch, with Bearfoot, In2nation, Gypsy Rumble, Forrest Run, Dear Willow, Not To Regret, Muules, The Sundowners, and Scrappy Coco bringing a healthy mix of genres for the night.
Sunshine Coast boutique festival, Sea N Sound was back again for another round, and despite the threat of wet weather, persevered and brought the goods.
Mixing craft beer, delicious seafood, and a mix of Australian talent, from Amy Shark and I Know Leopard, to Busby Marou, Cheap Fakes and Oka, there was plenty of entertainment to keep the vibes flowing.
The sun was shining, the crowd pumping, and the music next level. Big Pineapple Music Festival stampeded its way through the Sunshine Coast once again, proving just how popular of a music festival it has grown to become.
We sent photographer Chris Clow (@photography_by_chrisc) along to capture the moments.
Sunshine Coast riff lords, Hobo Magic, have outgrown their Australian roots, and are branching out by heading to the home of psych riffage - Europe. But before they jet off and relocate themselves in the cold, they did one final stretch of dates, including a home show at Solbar. Teaming up with younger psych Indie rockers Fight Ibis, The Unknowns, and Old Home, Cynthia Lee was there to capture a big night dedicated to the monster-sounding trio. Here’s to the riff!
Brisbane hiphop legends, Butterfingers are back on the road, celebrated 15 years of the acclaimed album, ‘Breakfast at Fatboys’. Back in 2004, this album scored Triple J Feature album of the week upon release, as well as slots in that year’s Hottest 100 AND an ARIA nomination for Best Independent Release. So, to celebrate the fifteenth birthday of the amazing debut album, Butterfingers have headed off on a massive national tour, choosing The Villa Noosa to kick it all off. Joining them on the line-up were Emph’n’Treats, and Fresh Violet.
2018 was a huge year for Joyride, and he continues to cruise on through, particularly with the success of ‘6am’. As part of his latest Sunrise Chaser Tour (in support of the album of the same name), Joyride hit up Solbar, along with Heaps Good Friends, and Approachable Members of Your Local Community. We sent along photographer Cynthia Lee to enjoy the ride…
To celebrate the launch of her track ‘Small Talk’ late last year, singer/songwriter Ayla decided to organise a run of intimate ‘house’ shows (as well as visiting a few venues along the way).
Christmas got a little dark this year, with goth shock-rock legends Darkc3ll bringing the heavy to Solbar for one big night of riffage. Joining the onslaught were Coast heavyweights Plague The City, local weirdos Spew’n, and kicking off the night was Black Banner. We threw the horns up in the jolliest of ways, and sent Cynthia Lee to capture all the action…
