New indie music streaming app, Second Press - offering fair pay for artists, launching June 19

Fair pay for artists: Second Press, an indie music streaming app paying 85%, built by a working musician, launches on iOS across Australia and New Zealand.

After five years as a working musician, Nic Munnelly built the alternative she couldn’t find. Second Press launches 19 June with 60 founding artists, no ads, no AI music, and 5–9× the per-stream rate of the major platforms.


Second Press, an independent music streaming service that returns 85% of every subscription to artists and rights holders, launches today across Australia and New Zealand. It was built by Nic Munnelly, a working musician of five years, after a search for an ethical streaming alternative came up empty.

Listeners pay $12 AUD per month for unlimited streaming. Of every subscription, 70% is paid directly to the artists each subscriber listened to - distributed monthly - with a further 15% to songwriters through APRA AMCOS. That's 85% in total, paying artists five to nine times more per stream than the major platforms depending on listening patterns.

"I've watched how hard it's become for independent artists to make a decent income off of their music - around a third of a cent per stream on most majors. And more and more, the major platforms are engaging in practices a lot of independent artists don’t feel aligned with - hosting AI-generated music trained on artists' own work without consent, and funding ventures many of us find unethical," said Munnelly.

"I went searching for an ethical alternative and came up empty-handed. So instead of complaining about it, I decided to build one myself, something made for the music community that actually pays artists fairly.”

Unlike algorithm-driven platforms, Second Press is curated by hand. It launches with 60 founding artists - spanning indie, rock, alt-rock, surf, psychedelic rock, post-punk, country, folk, experimental and electronica - including Baby Cool, GIMMY , Magic Machine, Fungas, Late Night Therapy, Druid Fluids, Seaside, Media Puzzle and horse.

Listeners stream via a dedicated iOS app.
