Sydney’s POLYBIUS return with more hook-laden indie pop-rock on their evocative new single, ‘Sun Song’ - a track, that, on its surface is a bright feel-good song driven by uplifting melodies, but underneath lies a bittersweet story of losing yourself in love.
It’s the feeling of knowing you could get burnt, but chasing love anyway - like a summer fling you invested everything into only to realise you were playing a role to keep them close.
Starting with a catchy guitar riff before kicking into full power as the drums come in, ‘Sun Song’ draws you into a sound that feels instantly bright yet emotionally charged. Blending shimmering melodies with a subtle edge, the track leans into the band’s love of guitar-led songwriting while exploring a more dynamic, layered space.
‘Sun Song’ is riff-heavy pop rock drenched in warmth and fuzz, built around the kind of instantly infectious chorus that feels tailor-made for a crowd sing-along from Tamzin. With this release — and the two before it — POLYBIUS continue carving out a distinctive corner of indie rock that subtly folds prog ambition and polished pop sensibilities into its DNA.
There’s a constant sense that the band could easily push into something much heavier, but their restraint is what gives ‘Sun Song’ its punch; every hook lands without being weighed down by excess. The result is a track that feels both expansive and radio-ready, though that slow-burning half-time ending offers a tantalising glimpse of the heavier instincts bubbling underneath the surface.
Lead vocalist and co-writer Tamzin Donovan says:
“Sun Song, for me, is very real and emotional. It was definitely inspired by my relationship at the time and how I felt like I was in a long-distance relationship even though we lived five minutes apart. I also didn’t know how to be on my own once we broke up, as we grew up together, and I needed to find myself again”
“At its core, Sun Song is an anthem that I see carrying on for a long time. It’s very catchy and relatable, but I’m very biased.”
Lead guitarist and co-writer Simon Calder explains:
“The song originated from the main riff that was accidentally stumbled across on the guitar while listening to “This Is The One” by the Stone Roses. I kept it around for months but it just stayed as a catchy motif. Everyone seemed to have a positive reaction to the riff so finally I began working on it with Tamzin to turn it into a song. The chorus melody is an example of balance where it has long, drawn out lines that juxtapose with the busier instrumentation. The song always felt like you’re driving away from a moment in your past so Tamzin and I made sure the lyrics reflected that feeling”
“The half time section was suggested by Donovan and is a very fitting outro that hits home the feeling of angst and gives some more grit to the song”
With influences sitting between pop and rock, POLYBIUS continue to build a sound defined by big choruses, dynamic guitars, and an emotional core built for connection. Their new single, ‘Sun Song’, pairs an uplifting, feel-good sound with a deeply melancholic story.
Following previous releases ‘Hideaway’ and ‘Get Even’, ‘Sun Song’ continues POLYBIUS’ momentum as they build towards their upcoming EP, due late May.
Made up of Tamzin Donovan (vocals), Simon Calder (lead guitar), William Murray (bass) and Donovan Lane (drums), POLYBIUS are an Australian band with a clear focus: creating guitar-led songs with catchy melodies, emotional weight and high-energy live impact. Their music sits in the space between vulnerability and intensity, drawing listeners in with hooks while delivering the kind of catharsis that lingers long after the final chorus.
‘Sun Song’ is out now on all major streaming platforms.
