PREMIERE - Thea Fitzgerald reignites musical passion with uplifting new single, 'Red Light'

After several years away from the recording studio, Australian singer-songwriter Thea Fitzgerald is back with her captivating new single, ‘Red Light’ — a track that marks both a musical and personal rebirth, which is premiering right now on The Point Music News, ahead of its September 19 release.

Following the release of her 2020 single ‘Woman’, Fitzgerald relocated to London with plans to dive straight into a new EP. Instead, she found herself grappling with self-doubt and disconnection from the pressures of recording and releasing music. “I felt very overwhelmed and confused, and lost a lot of confidence in my passion, ability and purpose,” she reflects. “But interestingly, that never stopped me from picking up a guitar and writing.”

Rather than forcing the process, Fitzgerald leaned into the simple joy of songwriting and live performance. Over the past few years she’s written prolifically and played shows across the UK and Australia, reconnecting with the essence of why she makes music in the first place. “This really let me fall back in love with music again, which in all honesty, I thought I might have lost.”

Thea Fitzgerald’s ‘Red Light’ marks a shift from the smooth RnB-pop sheen of her earlier work into something more organic and grounded. Built on acoustic strums, crisp pop production, and stacked harmonies, the track lets her voice shine — confident yet fragile, vulnerable without losing its strength. It’s a sound that feels less about polish and more about honesty, carrying the warmth of someone rediscovering their spark.

There are shades of late-90s/early-00s Aussie pop here — Natalie Imbruglia’s Left of the Middle, the sweet directness of Merril Bainbridge — but ‘Red Light’ doesn’t linger in nostalgia. Instead, it captures the relief of an artist returning with clarity and calm, turning self-discovery into melody. It’s a fresh step forward, and one that lingers long after the last chorus fades.

Written in Melbourne and first performed live at Sofar Sounds, ‘Red Light’ evolved over months of live shows before Fitzgerald began working on its production in London. Capturing the song’s raw, live energy in the studio proved to be a challenge, but the result is a track she calls “a true reflection of the journey I’ve been on — one I’m proud to finally share.”

With ‘Red Light’, Thea Fitzgerald steps into a new era — one shaped by patience, resilience, and a sustainable love of music that she intends to carry forward.

‘Red Light’ is premiering right now on The Point, but officially releases September 19th.
