Broken Waves deliver indie funk finesse on latest single, 'The Chase'

Adelaide’s indie genre-blenders, Broken Waves return with a fresh banger meant straight for the dancefloor with the super infectious ‘The Chase’, which is out now.

Drawing sonic comparisons to the likes of Parcels, Jungle Giants and Glass Animals - Broken Waves blend elements of funk, dance music and indie rock on their latest single; with endless grooves, striking vocal harmonies and a beat that won’t quit -’The Chase’ feels like it’s poised for dancefloors and festivals alike.

As the band explains, ‘The Chase’ marks a shift in style for the band; “It was heavily influenced by our growing obsession with jazz house, electronic textures, and the kind of EDM that prioritises groove over spectacle. We didn’t want to just experiment for the sake of it — the goal was to refine and tighten our approach to songwriting, to make something leaner and more intentional without losing the emotional weight.

‘The Chase’ is fresh, slick and shimmering with indie-funk finesse — the kind that oozes like melted chocolate over summer fruit. Broken Waves balance fat, tight beats with velvet-smooth vocals and a tangle of clean guitars that ping-pong across the mix like sunlight off a disco ball. There’s an effortless cool running through it all, but it never feels detached. ‘The Chase’ isn’t just built for the dancefloor — it stalks it, all swagger and shine. An Adelaide band with polish and groove to burn.

This track came out of a particularly collaborative and spontaneous period for us. Ideas were bouncing around constantly — chords, beats, lyrics — and for the first time in a while, it felt like we were all chasing the same instinct at the same time. We made a conscious decision to preserve that live energy in the final recording. You can hear the push and pull, the tension, the improvisation — all those little human imperfections that give a track its real pulse. The Chase feels like a turning point for us sonically — more precise, more rhythmically driven, but still anchored in everything we’ve always cared about: character, feeling, and a touch of chaos.”

Following on from 2024 single ‘Do You Understand?”, ‘The Chase’ almost serves as a thematic sequel to their previous release, with the band stating that ‘The Chase’ “emerged from the same raw conversations about toxic masculinity and the weird dynamics of online culture that inspired our last single, Do You Understand. It exists in that same world — one fixated on performative identities, emotional armour, and the complicated, often performative dance of modern dating. We wanted to write a love song for the emotionally unavailable—for the people who ghost before they get ghosted. It’s an ode to Tinder swipes, talking stages, and the hollow rituals of modern courtship. There’s romance in it, but it’s the kind that’s more about performance than connection, and that’s kind of the point.”

Lyrically, frontman Ben Lyons-Reid embodies a character to get the story across, “stitched together from our worst instincts—someone who’s mastered the script of charm but fumbles when faced with real vulnerability. He’s not a villain, but he is a mirror. We use him to expose how easy it is to hide behind irony, detachment, and just enough emotional awareness to excuse bad behaviour.”

Using this writing technique allowed the band to explore themes deeper, but also give some unique perspectives to the song - allowing the listener to come up with their own conclusions

“Depending on how you hear it, The Chase could be coming from someone like that—or from someone about to ghost you. That ambiguity was deliberate. It’s part self-portrait, part imagined monologue, part attempt to understand what goes on in the mind of someone who’s just not willing (or able) to show up emotionally. It’s not an answer so much as an invitation to sit with the discomfort. The Chase isn’t just a critique—it’s a confession. And like most of what we write, it’s aimed as much at ourselves as it is at the culture we’re swimming in” - BROKEN WAVES

Broken Waves have built a solid following over the years, with three sold out headline shows in their hometown over just the last year. Making a name for themselves as a force on the live circuit, they’ve supported the likes of Jacob Fitzgerald and Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird and have appeared at festivals such as Music SA’s SCOUTED festival, and Making Waves festival.

‘The Chase’ is fresh and waiting for rotation on your streaming platform right now.
