My Chérie shares courageous and soul-stirring new EP, 'Life is Short and Life is Long'
Adelaide’s My Chérie breaks boundaries with her beautifully left of centre alt-pop stylings, unveiled in her most vulnerable and sonically immersive work yet in her new EP, ‘Life is Short & Life is Long’.
The EP showcases a selection of tracks that explore identity, expectation, and healing with unflinching honesty, featuring previous single, ‘Dishes in the Sink’, ‘Life Is’, and the powerful new focus single, ‘Box of Pencils’.
Already making waves in Australia’s music scene, ‘Life Is’ was named a finalist in the South Australian Music Awards for Best Song, while ‘Dishes in the Sink’ received triple j Unearthed radio rotation and a First Spin, solidifying My Chérie’s status as one of the country’s most compelling emerging voices.
‘Life is Short & Life is Long’ is a celebration of uncertainty, vulnerability, and whimsy — all wrapped in beautifully quirky eclecticism. My Chérie’s vocals are genuinely hypnotic, shifting from alt-pop siren to innocent folk faerie with ease, while she shapes layers of organic and synthetic textures into something entirely her own.
There’s a real sense of artistic selfhood here. Much like Kate Bush or Tori Amos shrugged off expectations and let the songs dictate their own worlds, My Chérie follows no rules but her own, serving each track with intent and imagination. Across these five songs, she offers little extensions of herself — dreamy, unpredictable, and deeply felt. A mesmerising, standout EP.
At the centre of the EP lies ‘Box of Pencils’, a track that balances pain with tenderness through emotionally rich lyricism and immersive production. Lines like “I’m fading away, I’m floating away” capture the weight of depression and self doubt, while also symbolising release, a kind of baptism, a letting go of old expectations.
“This is the song I’ve been too scared to release,” says Chérie. “Sharing it feels like true healing happening in real time. It’s about the mourning that comes when you can’t give the people you love the life they want for you, for me that is the husband, kids, the picket fence, the church on Sundays. I’ve lived with that grief for years. Releasing this song is an act of courage.”
She continues:
“When what you feel to be true and kind and loving is advertised as being wrong, it makes it difficult to trust with complete certainty. It’s a slow muscle that’s built. It doesn’t matter how many times people point out the obvious or offer advice, how do you truly believe that your path is okay? The trust in the life you build for yourself comes from every time you’re courageous. Like this for me, releasing this song.”
‘Box of Pencils’ is more than just a personal story, it speaks to anyone who’s wrestled with the expectations they’ve inherited.
“Whether it’s choosing the ‘safe’ job, leaving a relationship, or stepping into the unknown, we all grieve the futures we were conditioned to long for,” Chérie reflects. “I hope this song feels like a warm hug in people’s moments of uncertainty, and that my vulnerability brings some love into the world.”
With ‘Life is Short & Life is Long’, My Chérie steps boldly into a new era, crafting a body of work that is both intimate and expansive. This EP is not just a collection of songs, it’s a statement of self-trust, transformation, and creative bravery.
My Chérie just celebrated the release with a headline EP Launch at Nexus Arts on November 22, showcasing the EP in full with her live band. Just one week later, she’ll share the stage with global icons Lenny Kravitz and JET, performing as part of the BP Grand Final on November 29, a career-defining moment for the Adelaide artist. Closing out an already monumental chapter, My Chérie has also just been announced on the WOMADelaide 2026 lineup, where she will perform in March, cementing her place as one of South Australia’s most exciting emerging voices.
