Gold Coast duo get Super Massive with latest sci fi alt pop banger, 'Caught In A Web'
Gold Coast dance-rock duo Super Massive blast off into the stratosphere with their single, ‘Caught In A Web’ - an amalgam of electro, pop, synth pop, rock and EDM, smooshed together into a peachy, summery alt-pop banger.
Starting with a whispery vocal that seductively invites you to “Just lie back. Oh… relax”, the song soon kicks into an infectious beat that builds to a drop as big as a barrel at Kirra Beach (where the duo live), before sweeping all in its path along on a glorious, pumping, four-on-the-floor chorus with surf rock influences.
It’s a case of cue the lasers and set the disco beats for stun with ‘Caught In A Web’, with Super Massive bringing alt-pop spunk to sci fi Nu Disco, balancing epically cheesy 80s synths (with bonus super-panned rotodrum roll from left to right) with thick, full beats and vocalist Malina’s space fantasy delivery. Imagine the dangerously cute alt-pop chaos of Happyland getting beamed up into the cosmic funk mothership piloted by Def FX. That’s ‘Caught In A Web’—a glittery slice of dancefloor escapism that’s impossible to resist. Resistance, after all, is futile.
Super Massive is the creative co-writing partnership of drummer/composer/producer Glenn Abbott (aka Bryan Ferrysexual from beloved platinum-selling, ARIA-nominated Australian cult band Machine Gun Fellatio) and singer/songwriter/actor/dancer Malina Hamilton-Smith.
The pair formed Super Massive over a shared love of vintage 70’s funk and disco, and a common vision of crafting pop songs that are a true 50/50 blend of electronic dance and rock: Infectious and visceral music that moves you deep inside and moves you to dance.
Glenn describes the band’s sound as “a blend of multi-layered synthscapes and dancefloor beats with live instrumentation combining the rock sound of Led Zeppelin and AC/DC with the electronic elements of Daft Punk, Basement Jaxx, Depeche Mode and Garbage, and a pretty hefty dose of the funkiness of 70s disco funk bands like Chic and the Brothers Johnson.”
‘Caught In A Web’ was written, recorded and produced by Glenn & Malina in their home studio, and mixed and mastered by two of Australia's best engineers: –
Daniel Denholm, one of Australian’s most ARIA-nominated engineers, mixed the song (Sia, INXS, Kylie Minogue, Silverchair, Midnight Oil and many more).
Michael Lynch brought his many years of commercial experience to mastering the track (Snob Scrilla, Endorphin, Jimmy Barnes, John Butler Trio, Midnight Oil and more).
Featuring compelling vocals and creative lyrics by singer/songwriter Malina Hamilton-Smith, ‘Caught In A Web’ is an upbeat siren song – a digital-age fable – about the invisible ties that connect people, with under-layers about the increasingly merging virtual/real life interface that eloquently capture the zeitgeist of life for all of us human beings in the year 2024.
Completely flipping EDM/dance protocols on their head, the song’s squelching cyber-injected synths and electronic bass are driven by a fusion of electronic and real drums, played with cracking finesse by Glenn, who is arguably one of the best drummers in Australia (Machine Gun Fellatio, Disco Disciples, Vrag, Bryan Ferrysexual Experience, Shaftman, Tim Freedman’s Penguins on Safari, Murray Cook (Original Red Wiggle) & his Soul Movers.
‘Caught In A Web’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
