Melbourne-based producer/singer/songwriter, Bel Kil delivers a playful yet introspective indie/alt-pop single in ‘Kinda Funny’, which emerged from the mixed reactions to Bel’s decision to chase her creative dreams.

With its upbeat rhythms and thought-provoking lyrics, the song captures Bel Kil's unique ability to infuse both fun and depth into her music. The chorus, "You look at me and think girl your crazy dreams are kinda funny / I look at you and think boy there’s more to life than chasing money,” captures the essence of the track, emphasising the value of following your heart. Bel shares, “I think it was a reaction to observing people's sceptical 'oh's' and genuine 'oh wows!' when I told them I had quit my job to follow my dreams of producing music.”

It’s hard to put a finger on where ‘Kinda Funny’ belongs, with its mashup of crunchy drum loops, blended with an almost revitalised laid-back New Jack Swing, melded with synth pop, and an indie aesthetic. But therein lies the charm from Bel Kil’s latest. There’s a sun-roasted, lazy bounce to the track, which brings to mind the Len classic, ‘Steal My Sunshine’, but with a hint of darkness underpinning. It’s a track with a quirky kind of sass.

Growing up on a farm in the Northern Grampians, Bel Kil was surrounded by a family with a deep love of music. Her inquisitive mind led to a childhood filled with constructing, creating, and playing guitar. Bel’s expansive style draws from multiple genres, decades, and influences while maintaining a modern pop edge. This November, her love of music and community has inspired her to curate her own festival in rural Victoria, in the town of Ararat.

‘Kinda Funny’ was mastered by Joe Carra of Crystal Mastering, a Grammy nominated mastering engineer who has worked with Pond, The Teskey Brothers, King Gizzard, Bias B, The Murlocs, Pipe-Eye, and Courtney Barnett.

‘Kinda Funny’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
