The Cheaks hit hard with latest indie rock single, 'Starting Again' - announce debut EP

Newcastle indie rock outfit, The Cheaks are launching into the summer season headfirst with their most exciting material yet, starting with the striking new track, ‘Starting Again’. This ties in with the announcement of their debut EP, ‘SIRENS’, which is set for release this month.

A refreshing take on high energy indie guitar music, ‘Starting Again’ is a perfect example of the dynamism and chemistry The Cheaks have been refining during their time together as a band. Citing artists like Catfish and the Bottlemen, Inhaler and more as influences on their core sound, The Cheaks inject buoyant personality into this song – a fitting follow up to 2023’s string of popular singles in ‘Too Hot In The Afternoon’ and ‘No Love Anymore’, as well as this years’ ‘Misapprehension’.

Building on an 80s sequenced synthesiser riff that has an underlying sinister groove, The Cheaks have avoided bringing a standard indie rock tune in ‘Starting Again’. While the jangly reverb-drenched chords are ever-present, this track hits a lot harder than expected, particularly with the double-time choruses, nudging the track briefly into punk territory. ‘Starting Again’ has plenty of indie bounce packed in, loaded with rebellion and punch; an absolute belter of a track.

Of ‘Starting Again’, The Cheaks provide insight, noting that, “We love making music that you can belt out at the top of your lungs in a room full of people, but when you really buckle down and listen to every word, you get hit straight in the guts. Starting again is no different. The song is about letting go of things, navigating all those emotions involved but knowing that everything will be okay in the end. The song has an undertone that when times are tough you can’t go in alone, grab your mates and get through things together.”

Recorded at Sonora Studios with Jack Nigro (DMA’S, Skegss, The Terrys), ‘Starting Again’ also featured the touch of Darren Ziesing (RÜFÜS DU SOL, The Buoys) on final mastering. What started as an initial demo that frontman Flynn Devon had put together in the very early stages of The Cheaks’ history, quickly developed into a song that has since become a live favourite – capturing the essence of the band.

“Recording the track was a blast, we went to Jack Nigro with our original bare bones song to which Jack added in so many different layers and concepts. From starting out as a guitar-based rock song, it slowly formed into a layer filled, sample riddled track with updated instrumentation such as a classic piano played by Jack himself. It was special having Jack play on the track, having a part of himself and input captured in our music.” THE CHEAKS

To date, The Cheaks have been racking up impressive show after impressive show; broadening their scope of influence with a strong reputation as performers in Newcastle and Sydney. Performing alongside the likes of Le Shiv and Crocodylus, the group has kept their focus on elevating their craft – their release of singles throughout 2023 is proof of the band’s potential, cemented now by the release of this brilliant new track.

Keep your eyes and ears out for The Cheaks’ debut EP, ‘SIRENS’ due this month, and take in the new single, ‘Staring Again’ right now on all streaming platforms.
