September Barker levels up on 8-bit indie glitch pop single, 'Sexistentialism'
Melbourne avant-garde alt indie pop artist September Barker levels up with the latest single, ‘Sexistentialism’, which traverses cyberpunk city-scapes riddles with memories of an old lover, and swarming with impulses to hide the heart from new ones.
Emerging from the age-old idiom ‘to get over someone, you have to get under someone’, ‘Sexistentialism’ positions the listener as Player 2 in September’s game of love.
Moving on from Level 1, Barker’s previous release ‘Comfortably Lonely’, the new track sees our Player 1 fighting a battle of turbulent jealousy and melancholy sentiment, soundtracked by soaring synth lines and thumping beats.
‘Sexistentialism’ powers up on super quirky glitch pop, using the combo moves of heavy digital synths, and arcade samples, to boost September Barker’s blend of indie sharpness and garage rock vocals. The track blips and bounces its way along, before loading into spooky bonus rounds full of eerie tones and heartbreak. Game over for the heart, man, but damn it makes you want to insert another coin and try again.
Continuing to embrace their eccentric style of abstract 8-bit pop, Barker creates an immersive retro-futurist arcade aesthetic that grounds uncanny digital soundscapes in deeply relatable tribulations of love.
‘Sexistentialism’ offers a unique sense of personal retrospection and artistic refinement, existing within a body of songs that Barker has reimagined since their original release in their younger years. Redevelopment has gifted September Barker the ability to articulate new influences, drawing from the production styles of Pharrell Williams and Daft Punk, whilst maintaining the song’s original jazz-romance essence to create a niche and surprising work.
The core of Barker’s unique sound arises from their tenacious sense of independence, allowing for the emergence of creativity in the face of limitation. Barker’s ever-expanding 8-bit world of synthesizers and digital beats was built through artistic ambition and a midi keyboard found in a hard rubbish pile.
‘Sexistentialism’ was written, recorded and produced independently by September Barker, with mixing by Mike Miller and Mastering by Johnsen Cummings.
‘Sexistentialism’ is available now on all digital platforms.
