East Point ebb and flow with smooth new Aussie roots track, 'Violet'
Top End band, East Point have followed up their first release, ‘Let Go’, with a brand new indie roots track, ‘Violet’ which mixes a golden Aussie summer with a lost opportunity for love.
East Point - duo Ward Hancock and Rowan Dally (formerly of Rambutan Jam Band) - continue their intense and honest songwriting style, guided by years of touring, playing national festivals, and professionally working as producers and session musicians.
‘Violet’ is brimming with the sound of Australian indie reggae, from the rounded bass, some dub fairy dust, the cross-over pop-rock drumming that sits in the pocket, the guitar upstrokes, and smooth vocal delivery with a hint of ocker. East Point have pulled together a solid groove, light-footed in sections, with some nods to contemporaries such as The Beautiful Girls, and Ocean Alley.
The track moves from a slow, pleasing bounce, to an intense rock-out that cascades in to a retro collage of yesteryear. ‘Violet’ encapsulates an all-too-common yearning to re-live a lost opportunity.
With this song, Ward and Rowan continue their ebb and flow songwriting style that underscored their time with Rambutan Jam Band. Listeners journey with ‘Violet’, from childhood to present day and speculate what might be.
As East Point explain, it’s a sombre take on the titular character’s past, but Ward finds light, hope and the possibility of love in Violet’s situation.
"Her mum didn’t smile much, daddy was real mean. The bro went AWOL, she flew the coup at seventeen – but as she grew the sun would shine, like it does at East Point…”
Self-produced and recorded at Dally’s Sands Studio in Darwin, the song was mixed in Sydney by Ian Pritchett of Noisegate Studios (Bootleg Rascal, Angus & Julia Stone, The Beautiful Girls). The final touches were polished in Melbourne.
"While writing this song I couldn’t stop hearing beautiful, warm analogue synthesizers.” explains Hancock “It’s not usually our style but they suited the narrative so well.”
Enter Banjo Colbourne (B. C. Slumber) and Miguel Hutton (Velvet Bloom, King River Rising), musicians based in Melbourne.
"Those two guys are a dream team!” says Dally, “Banjo dials in the sounds and Miguel plays. Between them is a wealth of experience, gear and inspiration.”
Be sure to keep up with East Point’s explosive entry to the scene. Carrying the baton from their debut single ‘Let Go’, ‘Violet’ will transport you to an Australian summer wherever you may be in the world – equal parts nostalgic, honest and warm.
‘Violet’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
