Fight Ibis sneakily drop brand new album, 'The Black and White Days' and tour dates.
Brisbane’s loveable indie rock weirdos, Fight Ibis have managed to drop a whole damn new album, ‘The Black and White Days’, having survived a line-up change, personal break-ups, tour cancellations, lost recording sessions and more.
Never one to stick to industry formulas, the new album takes listeners on a journey of fun/chill/good vibes. Perfect for a weekend come up or come down.
Fight Ibis have done the sneaky, dropping ‘The Black and White Days’ with little to no fuss. Line-up changes within bands, particularly drastic ones, are an interesting transition to watch, and with the latest album, Fight Ibis have managed to maintain a hint of that cheeky weirdness that gained their fanbase in the first place, but also able to display a level of maturity, both in their songwriting, and by pulling back on their reliance on effects. There’s a heavy 70s folk-rock bent (shades of Neil Young creeping through), with very little fuzz used, but still enough energy present to keep the Ibis Army happy.
Maybe a global pandemic, loss of tours and recording sessions, and a line-up shake-up was needed to pull this effort out of their collective hats.
The only main criticism would be, despite their DIY approach to recording (which is always commended) the kick drum tone and the bass could have been mixed a little better, with the two sounding woolly, particularly in ‘I Heard A Pixie Sing’. Luckily this hiccup isn’t as evident in album standouts, ‘Rollin’ Tom Bindle’, ‘Threebird’, ‘Counterfeit Country’ and ‘Where Did You Go?’, the latter providing the soundtrack to a midnight stroll through the desert.
Kyuss, band frontman says "“We’re Excited to hit the road in celebration of a new album release. We’re feeling ambitious and looking to become millionaires by the end of this run so come along and help make that happen."
"The new album was made out of the love of DIY. Recorded and mixed all in a basement, it captures naive ambition pretty well. It’s raw and silly but it has the feeling of fun, freedom and sadness sprinkled throughout, making it a well rounded, visit-every-corner kinda album. It’s exciting to be playing it locally and down across borders where we haven’t been able to go in years. The band is in the best spirits it’s ever been in and we’re all itching to visit YOU soon. Yeah.”
Known for a wide palate of sonic offerings, Fight Ibis dial this one back from their previous heavy Psych offerings, showing signs of wider influence and compositional maturity.
