Second Idol return with unapologetic, fiery new alt rock single, 'Boxing Ring'

Eora/Sydney’s Second Idol return with their first new release in two years in ‘Boxing Single’ - an unapologetic alternative rock track that tackles the consistent inequality within the music industry.

Produced by Clayton Segelov (Shady Nasty / Sleepmakeswaves / Dear Seattle) at The Brain Studios, the new track surges with an unyielding rhythm and relentless spirit, carried aloft by the impassioned vocals of  Kate  Olivia. As the melody radiates defiance, insisting on an unapologetic presence, the arrangement coalesces  into a boundless fusion of authenticity, vulnerability and grit.

Absolutely drenched in reverb, ‘Boxing Ring’ adopts a blend of Brit Alt rock tones, and touches of goth rock to bring together a raw, rambunctious offering from Second Idol. The guitar fuzz is softened by the wash of echo and tremolo, but the attack is far from lessened - if anything it feels more sinister, while the rhythm section is relentless throughout. Comparisons to later-era The Cure, and early Placebo, particularly with Kate Olivia’s impassioned, biting vocal take, are abound and deserved with ‘Boxing Ring’; it’s a fierce, slamming track that dares to break away from current alt rock tones, with a touch of mid-90s nostalgia thrown in, while taking on the battles consistently faced within the music industry.

Second Idol talks about the inspiration behind 'Boxing Ring':

"'Boxing Ring' is a reflection on being a woman in the music industry. It can be a circus. It's informed by the barriers women face in the music industry. It's about our aspirations, dreams and struggles. The title refers to the continual fight that we face in the industry. That women, non-binary and trans musicians are often treated as diversity trophies, novelised, and not taken seriously. We're constantly pitted against each other and cut down. It feels as though we're thrown into a boxing ring with each other, fighting for scraps, where often the more femme-presenting individual wins and men leer from every corner. Join us in the ring to fight our way out."

Accompanying the release is music video directed by Cameron Davies, shot across Brighton Le Sands and Eora/Sydney's Inner West. Commencing with enigmatic glimpses of graffiti art, the band perform against a hazy beach backdrop, evoking a mysterious atmosphere further heightened by the rapid cuts of the instruments. The video seamlessly embraces VHS-style framing and colouring, injecting a timeless aesthetic that enhances the emotional resonance of Kate Farquharson's commanding expressions.

In the live scene, the band have previously shared the stage with acts such as The Buoys,  dust,  Teenage  Joans, SCABZ, Baxter Dury and Jen Cloher.

'Boxing Ring' is the first taste of a larger release to be announced in the coming months, and is out now on all streaming platforms.
