Sydney’s Maia Toakley has delivered a poetic ode to gaining power through perspective on latest single ‘Space Song’ - providing a vast world to dissolve into, tenderly embracing vulnerability and emotion.

On this latest track, Maia captures the fragile beauty of vulnerability with striking intimacy, with thanks to the haunting lyricism.

‘Space Song’ weaves pulsing, dreamlike beats with evocative lyricism of a futuristic, unpeopled space - she writes "stow away, hold on to the wing of a plane, just one look from space, I'll stay there". Waves of instrumentation and soaring vocals drift weightlessly through the track, constructing a cinematic, otherworldly atmosphere.

There’s a beautifully shadowed sway running through ‘Space Song’, balancing moments of icy distance with an earthy, organic pull that keeps it emotionally grounded. Maia Toakley channels flashes of Fiona Apple’s off-centre intensity and the theatrical weight of Tori Amos, yet the result feels unmistakably her own — steeped in a distinctly Australian sense of introspection and atmosphere.

It’s the kind of track that taps into the quiet urge to disconnect from the noise and drift somewhere beyond reach, suspended weightlessly in its own emotional orbit.

Maia Toakley’s powerful sound is shaped by the likes of Angie McMahon, Julia Jacklin and Sharon Van Etten - female musicians who consistently inspire her for their unfiltered, emotionally-charged songwriting. As a Top 100 shortlist for Vanda & Young 2025 songwriting competition, she has been hailed as “one of Australia’s most groundbreaking songwriters.”

Written with fellow Sydney musicians Hannah Brewer & Ethan Reginato, the track reckons with scale and surrender, featuring intentional production and an expressive edge reminiscent of Fiona Apple. “Space Song” marks Maia’s most authentic reflection yet, capturing the quiet ache of wanting to disappear into something larger than yourself.

Alongside the release is an official music video, shot in a stark, empty, otherworldly setting that mirrors the track's themes of scale, escape and the pull to stay.

’Space Song’ is streaming now on all digital platforms.
