Nocturnal embraces ALL the 80s on insanely catchy new single, 'Funhouse'
Perth-based multi-instrumentalist, Nocturnal follows on from his debut album with the brand new single, ‘Funhouse’. Stepping away from the theme of his debut release, ‘Funhouse’ brings a whole new vibe and a new direction for Nocturnal. With it’s upbeat and fun energy, ‘Funhouse’ invites you to dance and lose yourself in 80’s nostalgia.
The inspiration for ‘Funhouse’ came from attending a community fair for his daughter’s school. Nocturnal, aka Louis Rendle-O’Shea, enjoying the playful, buzzing energy of the place, found the song emerged organically, grabbing his phone and recording what became the bones and lyrics of the song then and there. ‘Funhouse’ was one of the fastest songs Rendle-O’Shea has written.
‘Funhouse’ is completely, unabashedly the epitome of an 80s coming-of-age movie soundtrack. Rendle-O’Shea has captured all the perfectly cheesy keys, drum machine goofiness, and slick pop-tuned vocals, and draped them in a parachute windbreaker tracksuit. Insanely addictive, and meticulously pieced together, ’Funhouse’ is the un-ironical musical mullet, all business at the front, and absolute party at the back.
The song has a strong 80’s vibe. Taking influence from Phil Collins, Talking Heads and Michael McDonald, Rendle O’Shea has channelled a modern day take on a classic 80’s sound. In its essence, ‘Funhouse’ is centred around letting your hair down and enjoying yourself.
The new single announces itself right away with its acapella intro. Released independently on January 26, ‘Funhouse’ gets you tapping your foot instantly with its LinnDrum intro. Once the big CS-80 synth hits, it’s all systems go. The vocals enter to pull you in and before you know it you are busting out your best 80’s dance moves.
The real hook lies in the chorus, with its catchy vocals, it’s bound to be stuck in your head for the rest of the day and leave you feeling “ten outta ten”! The guitar solo hits with its unmistakable 80’s tone which is reminiscent of Jesse’s Girl.
‘Funhouse’ was self-produced in Rendle-O’Shea’s home studio. Nocturnal once again turned to ARIA award winning recording engineer Dave Parkin (Spacey Jane, South Summit, Sly Withers, Old Mervs, Drapht) at Blackbird Studios for mixing. With his vast experience, Parkin gave the song the polish and energy it needed. Nocturnal then enlisted the skills of Simon Struthers at Forensic Audio to put the final master together.
‘Funhouse’ is a celebration of all the amazing sounds the 80’s had to offer and a refreshing change in direction for Nocturnal. With its upbeat tempo and big synths, ‘Funhouse’ is sure to get everyone dancing in their living room singing into their hairbrush!
‘Funhouse’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
