Brisbane singer/songwriter Hayley Marsten has just released her first co-produced single (teaming up with celebrated rock producer Magoo, and Dan Sugars), signalling a brand new era and her life and career.

‘Drowning Myself’, described as the sonic sister to the musical amalgamation of HAIM and Shania Twain, is about the realisation that sometimes the only person who can pull you out of the deep end is the one who threw you in; you. It’s a sad banger with the subject matter Hayley thought she would never explore, her own mental health.

There’s a lot of 80s nostalgic synths weaving into the track, blending with Hayley’s pop-country vocal stylings, and some tasty, obligatory country-rock guitar licks, backed by dance-rock/pop rhythms.

Of ‘Drowning Myself’, Hayley (a previous Golden Guitar nominee for Best Alt-Country album in 2020) says that, in some ways, the song feels like a huge departure for her.

“But in reality, this is the most of me that has ever been in a song, my first time as a co-producer and guitarist. I wrote this about the unrelenting standards I have for myself but this song is finally enough,” she said.

It’s an empowering song, that borders in to road-trip sing-along anthem territory, that is guaranteed to be a crowd favourite.

‘Drowning Myself’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
