In a year where we all would just want to teleport backwards through time to avoid the crapfest that is 2020, Sunshine Coast alt-rock nerds, Muules have jumped into their telephone booth and travelled back to the late 80s and have brought back their take on an epic Australian banger.

‘Breakaway’ by Australian synth & drums outfit, Big Pig was a chart-topping single in 1988, notable for its lack of guitar, heavy on the drums, and for featuring in the intro to the cult classic film, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.

Bassist/producer Rhys Fox said that their version of the Big Pig classic came from a much needed distraction during the mixing process for their debut full-length release.

“COVID restrictions had me diving head first in to mixing all the tracks for our album, and it was getting to the point where I felt I needed a break, but still wanted to do something fun,” he said.

“We’ve never been shy from doing our own take on covers (having done versions of The Presets’ ‘My People’, Sneaky Sound System’s ‘UFO’ and more), and I had been revisiting Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure where ‘Breakaway’ introduces the iconic time machine right at the start.  I’ve always loved that song, and wondered what it would sound like with a slightly heavier sound.”

The trio know that for some, this may be the first time they have heard ‘Breakaway’ (in any form), and are hoping that they have done the track justice, as well as leading listeners to explore the works of the very underrated Big Pig.

‘Breakaway’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
