Brisbane's Renee Spijker delivers lush cinematic ambient folk in the new single, 'Ruby'

Brisbane-based singer/songwriter Renée Spijker gives a taste of her upcoming debut EP with the new single, the intense ambient folk of ‘Ruby’.

Originally from the Netherlands, Renée grew up in a musical household, harbouring her passion for music. After graduating in Anthropology, Renée moved to Australia to focus on her music - utilising world sounds with an ethereal bent, Spijker takes the listener on a unique journey of the emotional human experience.

‘Ruby’ is deeply cinematic, mysterious and immersive. Renée, teaming up with producer duo Tim Bettinson (Vancouver Sleep Clini) and Luke Jenkins, have carved out rivers of sound, from the massive percussion and slinking melodic basslines, to the extra movements and textures, either organic or synthetic, which pool and float Renée’s haunting vocal and harmonies. At times Medieval, then merging into a more intense Middle Eastern dynamic (both of which share similar scales), ‘Ruby’ makes for a compelling listen - its intensity commands your attention and delivers in spades.

Speaking on the track, Renée explains that ‘Ruby’ is a journey of embracing one’s darkest side in an ethereal space, layering the dynamic ambience of our emotional experiences.

“It's about accepting your flaws, and insecurities and reminding yourself that everybody has their own Ruby within. Their own fears, their own dark shadow side that they don't like to face. In the end, I think it comes down to whether are you ready to learn from Ruby,” she said.

Having worked together with her friends Tim Bettinson (artist Vancouver Sleep Clinic) and Luke Jenkins in Tim's studio in Brisbane, the debut EP has been pieced together over a month’s worth of writing and recording, with Renée expressing gratitude for the production duo and the collective creative journey they have been on so far.

For best results, listen with good headphones or on a big system to take in all the textures in this new single.

‘Ruby’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
